Eating Tranny Mounts Opinions needed. - 04/15/10 07:26 PM
I am on my third or fouth tranny mount in as many years. There is no driveline vibration and maybe it's just cheap crappy mounts.
1. Is there a company that sells better quality mounts, preferably made in the USA?
2. How much vibration am I going to pick up from a poly mount. This is a daily driver traveling car so I do like the quiet smooth ride.

What's the vehicle? Poly Bushings (http://www.polybushings.com/) makes some great parts but limited to just a few specific vehicles at this time.

Schumaker makes a rear mount that is supposed to be stronger. I have not used one as I have no troubles with my rear mount.

Have you checked the motor mounts? If those aren't intact they will stress the tranny mount.

Yep the motor mounts are in good shape.
Are the Schumaker mounts stiff?

Do you have a leak that is getting the mount wet?

Nothing abnormal.
I'm thinking it is just cheap chinese rubber.
I figure I will try to get a good mount and be done with it.

I'd say it's the cheap mount material(s). I just replaced my OEM one with one from NAPA. The steel is a thinner gage and the horizontal strengthing bracket that is welded to the mount on the OEM one is missing from NAPA's. The rubber only partially fills the mount cavity and to top it all off the, the darn thing is made in India! I think that the NAPA part is somehow related to No_Politics's health care plan.
I wrote an email to the maker but ofcourse, I've not gotten a reply. Next time I'm going with the poly type widly sold on ebay.

not sure how much vibes the poly will transfer. my dakota has solid engine mounts with a poly trans mount on the TKO, and I have a vibration I'm trying to sort out. I'm hopeful it was the drive shaft, when I had it built, I had them balance it at around 6,000 rpm, but was getting a vibration at around 60mph, which was around 3,100 rpms. had the shaft re-balanced, and they did add some weight to it. the new balance job was done at 2700 rpm. I'm hopeful that this fixed my vibes. if not, I might look at tossing my poly mount and seeing what a rubberone will do.
however, the 'experts' will tell you that the mount will NOT cause the vibration...it just transmits it to the frame so you can feel it--so if you go from rubber to poly and pick up a vibe, that means something else is wrong, and the vibe was being absorbed by the rubber in the mount...could be why it falls apart so quickly too

Yes, poly does transfer more vibration.
I broke a stud off a Schumacher engine mount before I even got to the point where I was ready to apply real torque. I went to AutoZone (gasp) and bought an engine mount and it is fine.

I used to go through tranny mounts on my 71 RR like they were candy..
switched to a Energy Suspension 5-1101G and never looked back..

How bad was the vibration increase?

I don't run poly on my '68 truck because no one makes poly for it (not actually 100% true. Imperial Services makes the trans isolator but they haven't been able to figure out how to keep the metal from delaminating from the poly but its a quality issue with their parts and not poly in general).
I do run poly in my '86 Daytona Turbo Z and it is actually annoying. I only switched one of the three isolators and I won't be doing the other two. But the 2.2L engine was always known for vibrating like crazy. I don't honestly know what it would be like on a V8.
I hope to find out soon though as there's a chance one of the Poly locking isolators made by Poly Bushings will work as an engine mount for my truck. Right now I have the engine strapped down with a chain. It is the only way I can keep from breaking engine and trans isolator.s
