Trailer TIRE recommendation

Trailer TIRE recommendation - 04/15/10 05:35 AM

I hope this is appropriate for this forum. I've got a 20ft trailer weighing about 2200lbs and it's about 6 years old with dry rotted 235-75-15 Hancook radial LT light truck tires from when it was new. What's the best brand tire to replace it and should I stick with radial / LT tire or go with a trailer tire. Although I dont use it more than once a year I want to put good tires on it. I figured some of you guys tow your race or show cars all over the place and can best tell me what to avoid if I don't want to worry about tire faiulre. Oh.. max veh weigh would be a 4300lb vehicle on the trailer. Thanks for your help!

I spoke with a tire guy earlier this week about trailer tires and he recommended Good Year Marathon 6 ply trailer tires.

Yup I recomend Goodyear also, I just bought 4 of them to replace my old 9 year old goodyears. They had at least 20K miles on them and were not wore out but were too old for my liking.

I don't like the "towmasters" as they are china tires. Not alot of choices for trailer tires that I know about.

Definetly get ST trailer tires for sure.

I had 16" goodyears on a 49' enclosed that I pulled over 60K miles with the same tires and they NEVER let me down.

235s are plenty for your weight, 225 would work also.

My open trailer uses 205-75-15 and I have at least 10K miles to test them and they have never let me down.

wHEN i BOUGHT MY NEW TIRES LAST MONTH i READ THIS about Goodyear tires, They say to add 10 PSI over what the tire sidewall says if you trailer over 65 MPH, who doesn't?

I was so hoping to make it to Van Nuys with my RoadRunner but I've had an electrical nightmare trying to sort out the wiring for the computer on the 5.7Hemi and trans. I might spring for new trailer tires and bring my '70 Charger or just drive out for the day and wander around wishing I brought a car to show.

At any rate thanks so much for the kind words, recognition, and remembering the car I brought two years ago ! Mike

I DO NOT recommend Goodyear Marathons! They will seperate the entire tread and rip your fenders to shreds, DAMHIK! I still use them occasionaly, but have used Greenball and Tow Masters more than anything else lately. I have towed thousands and thousands of miles and the worst are Carlisle, followed closely by Marathons. The best thing to do with your trailer is to buy 16" tires and wheels and eliminate any future problems.
