Transmission identification/ OD swap question

Transmission identification/ OD swap question - 04/13/10 08:19 PM

I bought a used A518 transmission. I think it may be a 46re (has three wire plug). I was told it came out of a 95 ram. The case numbers are PK52118307 1739 0331. Can anyone verify for me that it is in deed a 46RE?

Also I am wanting to put a A518 behind my 84 360 dodge truck. I have a 46RH for sure and this other might be a 46RE. I know the 360 is externally balanced. Is the magnum motor internally balanced? What torque convertor would I use?

PK52118307 is from a '92-'93 with a 318, it is a 46RH.

The 360 Magnum is externally balanced but it takes different weight(s) than the 360LA.

It has a 3 wire connector. Is it a lockup?

if the 360 magnum is externally balanced also. What torque convertor should I use? I have a 84 360la 727 torque convertor. They are lock up correct? Could I use my 727 torque convertor then?

92-93 46RH is a lock up with 3 pins..

the engine balance would determine the flexplate weights..

So I could use my 727 torque convertor and hook up the lockup like it was a 46re?

If it's a lock up convertor.

Not if it's from an LA360, read what I said "The 360 Magnum is externally balanced but it takes different weight(s) than the 360LA. "

I am wanting to put the 46rh behind a LA360. I know the magnum and LA 360 are externally balanced. The magnum doesn't require as much wieght. I need to us the converter to the motor not the tranny. So the engine stays balanced correct?

I just got another 3 wire 46rh. I just need to use a lockup converter and wire the lockup and overdrive like I would if I was using a 46re?

What is the best way to wire it up? I have read the two pressure switch option. I read in a hot rod mag about a unit from JVX racing. I found it in their catalog and emailed them but haven't heard anything yet.

I've been using a two pressure switch set up for the last year and it works great. I used the 83 chevy vacuum switch to feed the trans and I also have a kill switch on the dash for racing.

What is your setup? I understand the 2 pressure switch setup. Just wanting to make sure I get the right torque converter to mate to my LA 360.

360la (408 stroker)stock 93 dakota convertor, B&M flexplate.

Stop thinking RE. The RE trannies had more than three wires since they're computer controlled. All 2 and 3 wire transmissions can be installed without a computer.

you are using a magnum 318 converter? Does the B&M flex plate have the wieghts?

OK. I haven't been able to find a whole lot of information about it all. everyone just refers to A518 and doesn't specify RE or RH. I was under the assumption that all 46RH were a 2 wire and the RE's were the 3 wire because they were lockup. Looking for clarification because I don't like trusting just one page that I read online and things that I have read aren't lining up with one another.

I found the flex plate on B&M website. B&M part number 10236? Are the factory magnum converters neutral balanced? I have the convertors for the transmissions just don't have the flex plates.

I have the 46RH behind a 71 318. Used the two pressure switches with the vacuum switch. Get a copy of Chrysler Performance Upgrades, by Frank Adkins. Lots of great information about the swap and torque converters.

The 518/46RH can have either a 2-pin or 3-pin connector because they were available with or without lockup.

Unfortunately the term 518 is often used to describe all large case OD transmissions, the 46RE isn't a 518 and it will always have an 8-pin connector instead of the 2 or 3-wire connector found on the 518/46RH.

If it has a 2 wire plug it's a non lockup 518, if it's a 3 wire plug it's a lockup pre 96. The 96 and laters have a multi prong plug, you'll know the difference.

Re: Transmission identification/ OD swap question - 04/15/10 01:35 AM

re just means the solenoids and controlled by the PCM, the RH means it's controlled hydraulicly.

Re: Transmission identification/ OD swap question - 04/15/10 07:01 PM

The RH solenoids are also controlled by the PCM; the difference between the RH and the RE is the RE has no mechanical governor, a sensor in the tail takes the place of the mechanical governor.

Ok guys I need help , I have a 46rh 2 wire trans, so will a non lockup converter around a 2400 stall work with the overdrive . Engine is a la 360 . Running this converter in a 727 now . What else would I need to do this conversion as far as vacuum switches or just install a switch to engage the overdrive . Thanks in advance
