Anybody build a small block Conquest before? - 04/10/10 03:04 PM

I am planning on putting a small block Chrysler into a 1987 Chrysler Conquest. If I remember correctly these cars are rear wheel drive.

Anybody build one before? IF so would there be any MAJOR reasons on why not to do it.

I imagine these are very light cars and I want to put a stroker small block into one.

Ive never seen it done, but I think it would be a pretty cool swap. I like the Conquests, for an 80s car

High Performance Mopar magazine did this swap and documented it through a series of articles over several years in the mid 90s. Turned out pretty nice if I remember correctly

The car/article was done by Ted Wagner in NJ. Beautiful blue 88 with an automatic. He said "never again", but it was done nicely, ac, factory hardware, etc.

Bummer...I wonder if the swap would be any easier today than it was in the 90's???

I have seen Conquests with 340s' and small block chevys..
Everything has to be custom..
But note the Conquest is very heavy about 3450 LBs, great lines and rear wheel drive..

Just my $0.01..

I've seen them done with small block mopars, chevys and fords. Verly doable, not the lightest car out there but a cool looking car for the 80's. Motor/trans mounts will have to be custom, but that's not a huge deal.

I started helping a guy do it once. He didn't have a garage, so it was at my house until he decided to drag it to his apartment and then it got towed.
Anyway, the motor fits in the bay easy enough. In the mag article, they refabbed the 'K frame' but we cut the oil pan and moved the hump to the other end of the motor instead. They made some wacky looking long tube headers, but it will fit with manifolds on it or maybe shorty headers. I think the stock PS pump is on the passengers side, so we moved the alternator to the drivers side rather than mess with hoses. The trans fit in the tunnel with just a whack from a BFH in one spot on the passengers side. Make trans and motor mounts and you're on your way!

If you want to put a motor with some real power in a Conquest you are gonna have to come up with a rear axle and suspension that will hold up to the torque! The Conquest uses a IRS with a tiny rubber mounted differential that will be short lived behind a V8!!

That dont sound too bad. But alot of stuff sounds easy until you get into it.

Well that might be the nail in the coffin. That would also require alot of fab work for the rearend as well.
Putting a Dana 60 or 9 inch ford in it and changing it to leaf spring would be a nightmare.

Thanks for the info guys!
