Motorcycle oils are good quality and have ample zinc. I'd be concerned about straight 40 though. At start up oil pressure could shoot too high plus power and economy would suffer with the heavy oil.

40 weight won't build up that high a pressure that it would cause any problems. I've used 40 weight in a bunch of old worn out motors and had no trouble. Keeps them going for a while longer.

What I was thinking of doing is only using it in the summer and spiking it with 1 qt. of Marvel Mystery oil which is what I do anyway with the other multi-viscosity oils.
I found some HD SAE40 oil for sale in a sealed 55 gal. drum for $1 per gal. Which I thought was a good deal. I was pretty sure it also had the extra zinc in it also.

I run 20w 50 in my HDs and in the 440.Never hurt
anything.At a buck a gallon Id buy a drum myself.Run it.It wont hurt a thing.Rocky

Back in the day, Chrysler suggested using 40 weight engine oil, especially in their performance engines

Do you know who make HD oil? Neither do they!
The fact is that Harley-Davidson, like so many other "brands" of oil, contract with one or more oil companies to make their lubricants. Often, the decision as to who actually makes a private labeled product is based on low bid, and like almost everything manufactured by a low bidder, short cuts are taken in order to meet the low price.

I believe the drums are from a HD Dealer that went out of business.

40 W will be fine, even straight. I've ran it alot, years ago.

Over the years I have found that I will consistantly have better warm oil pressure with multigrades than with straight grade oils. IE better warm with 10/30 than with straight 30 weight.

You can't be serious. Harley is in the business of making bikes not oil. Do you know how much they would have to invest to produce their own oil.
They bid on it, like walmart and all the others who have their name on a oil that would never make it for themselves.
Get the facts, there is no Harley made oil.
