So...in my Quest for the Dual Quad Air Cleaner...Solved - 04/09/10 09:55 PM

Thanks to Steve from Hybrid Fiberglass...better known as Paint It Black on this board. Helped me out with pictures and talked me through what I should do. With a little imagination and some TLC, I turned his Stage 5 Dual Quad Air Cleaner into a 440 Dual Quad Air Cleaner. I spent last week cutting out the center holes with a dremel and a blade and then 2 days this week fiberglassing and resetting the holes where I need them. They are gonna stay gray for a while until I get the black and orange paint overseas (most likely gonna be painting it in August) but I think the air cleaner looks pretty killer in my engine bay. Now I have to mock up the correct linkage and get the fuel line going on to the setup...I hope I dont need another Air Cleaner, but if I do...I know where I am goin'

1st Pic : What I need to Cut and re-insert
2nd Pic : All cut away and set in with Duct Tape
3rd pic : All fiberglassed in place
4th Pic : All fiberglassed in place
5th Pic : All primered with PPG DP40
6th Pic : The original look in my engine bay
Note: I have 1" carb neck spacers between the Air Cleaner and the carb for linkage clearance and I am also going to try to stuff 1/4" to 1/2" phenolic spacers. I have over 1" clearance on the top.

Glad to help. Its always neat to send my parts to different corners of the earth.

For those that are curious, I actually do offer a base that would have sat directly down onto his carbs, but the design of that base is such that the lid would have been too high to fit under his stock hood with the spacer he is running. It is a dual 4bbl modified Air Grabber base essentially.

Peter, if you were here in the states and shipping wasn't so darned expensive, I'd use yours as a pattern to start making versions of that configuration and send you a fresh one. Unfortunately I am going to have to reproduce what you did here myself so I can make a mold.

Good job man!

Is that difference in center-center on the carbs due to the Eddy DQ distance (6 7/16") vs the old Chrysler distance (7 1/8")?

Why was this moved from general to Q&A???

No idea who moved it....

The placement of the holes was also due in part to my 3 speed wiper motor behind and my MSD Pro Billet Dizzy on the front. I had to keep it centered between those. From the pictures before purchase and with close up shots from NicksGarage I was thinking I was going to have to notch a radius into the front left side of the AirCleaner base to clear the dizzy but I was lucky and didn't have to (I have about 1/2" behind and same in the front. I have some billet spacers that I am going to install instead of the plastic Mr. Gasket ones, the diameter seems to fit a lot nicer and will take the support of the base.

Steve told me from the beginning the K&N would fit kinda hokey because of the lid, he said the stock one fits a lot better but I dont wanna drop $65 on a paper filter every so often. I have alot of dust and dirt in the air, last week the sky was red with a dust cloud from the Sahara.

That is possible but tempting fate of the air cleaner twice in its life would be cause for concern. Once with the Greek Postal service handling it....and 2nd with British Airways handling it for 8000 miles....I fear I may find the air cleaner in a few pieces.

One thing to ask.....Should I drill a hole in the Air Cleaner and put the tube inlet to allow for the proper venting of the drivers side bank breather? (That faded clear plastic in the last picture)

Or just swap it out to a filter?

You'd do better to just swap to a filter in my opinion. You could do what you are saying, but be careful of the angle of the tube so it doesn't put a crimp in the hose connecting the two.

what about the carb stud spacing for the lid

Simple fix there. I am going to put in the stud on both of the carbs then make a dog leg in them and have them come up through the factory holes in the lid.

Looks great! I'm glad the thread was moved because I often don't look in "general." This question has come up a number of times over the years.
