Comp Cam for a 440 - 04/09/10 03:23 PM

Thinking of putting a 284/296-507/510 in a 72 Rrunner, 440, auto, 323 gears. Do you guys think this cam will work? Car already has a performer rpm on it and I will put on a 750 vacuum secondary when cam goes in. Thanks for any advise!!!

What Torque converter?

Stock for now, obviously it would do better with more stall, but I was hoping it would do ok till I upgraded. Also has headers and 2-1/2 out the rear.

I would say you would have no fun with this cam. Especially without a converter.

A Honda civic will make you look bad.

That's a little overboard.

I think it would be OK, but definitely not up to it's full potential. A 2800-3200 convertor would make it alot more fun.

So what do you all recommend? I am wanting to hear it, but don't want a torqueless turd. With the stall would this be a great cam choice?

Well that's the $3000 question if you are going to a 2800/3000 stall later and will live with some driving through the converter OK but degree it in at 103 (give or take 1) and it will be much more pleasant now and when you go more TQ. Will your heads and valve springs take that lift?? They should. I ran a .509 old stock but went stiffer P3690933 after valve floating.

I think you would be happier with a milder grind. Plus you do not have compression to support the bigger grind. Later when you get a converter you will have even more fun with the milder grind.

Basically the cam in question is totally mismatch for what you have, and what info you have given so far.

Re: Comp Cam for a 440 - 04/09/10 07:24 PM

sorry for the short answer,on my part. the answer WE need is what is the car going to be? what are you wanting the car to do? more importantly, what are the plans to further performance? the worst engine is an overcammed slug. big cam, overlap, compression, ect ect,is a balanced of componets, that work together. thats why a HP440 didnt have a .509+ from the factory...but it ran strong all day, everyday. give some idea of what plans you have for the car,and we will help....for a nice street 440 i like a .480's cam, perf rpm,headers,906/mild portor ede head,10.0 comp,3.91,750/3310,2500 stall, tuned ignition/carb. i like mild for a non hassle 440 w/ enough grunt to get around those pesky civics ,lol

Sounds like I had better go smaller then. I just want to hear it without having to change everything to match it as I pretty much just have a stock 70 model 440 now. I hear this same question on here alot with thumper cams and all so I figured I'd take a shot with you guys.

Thats a lot of cam for low comp and 3;23 gears. Has to much duration in it also. The 480 is a good choise for the car. Plenty of low end and good street manners. Will work fine with the 750 carb and 3;23 gear. It will be more fun when you up the converter

If you want a cam you can hear, but still drive like a mild cam, look at the hughes whiplash cams. That's exactly what they're designed for.
