groan from left rear wheel....bearing? - 04/07/10 06:07 AM

I am assuming its the axel bearing going out, but was looking for others thoughts. Here is the situation:

70 road runner
4 wheel SSBC disc brakes
green bearings

There is a groan from the drivers side rear wheel. Mostly when I make right turns and will continue while going straight for a few seconds. Turning left makes no noise.

I jacked the rear of the car up and when I turn the wheel by hand the groan is there and is pretty loud, when I remove the tire and spin the rotor assembly the groan goes away, putting the wheel back on and it comes back.

So it seems there is something compressing with the wheel being tightened...

There is nothing rubbing or scrapping...so the only thing I can think of is the bearing going south...any other thoughts?

my greens did that also one side

then it leak oil at the shaft and bearing

new set and was fixed

do you have the thrust block in it?

I have run a thrust block in a 489 for 9 yrs no problem and the 742 case does not have one for a few yrs now

some say its not good to run the block as the greens do not like side loading

I do plenty of street duty with the one bearing going out after 9 yrs with a thrust block

do the SSBC brakes eliminate the old backing plate and not have a similiar thickness plate to replace it? I have wilwoods in back, and that's what these do. it ends up putting the axles too deep, putting a thrust load on them. my first set of greens lasted 5k miles like this. I figured out the problem, and used a spare set of retainer plates as a spacer to replace the backing plate, and no problems 21k miles later....

if you have to buy new bearings. buy the good ones from Dr Diff, member on this site. not the POS mopar ones.
