SPAL Electric Fans

SPAL Electric Fans - 08/03/08 12:41 AM

I have a BeCool aluminum rad with the SPAL dual 11" fan assembly that I was planning to use in my project. When I initially fitted everything, the fans cleared fine but I had a small change of plans and I am now using the March dual belt serpentine setup for the alernator and power steering. The new mounting for the power steering pump now interfers with the left side fan motor. No easy way that I can see to get around this problem so I tried mounting the assembly as a pusher fan setup but I am not sure how effecient this will be. From what I can gather the fans will push air this way (reversing them electrically) but it is not nearly as effecient or a recommended configuration. Has anyone used these SPAL fans (30102052) as pushers or if not, any suggestions for another fan or fans that may work. If there is an OEM dual fan that places the driver's side fan lower than the passenger side, I think that may work.

Thanks

Pushers will block air flow to the radiator and cause cooling problems. Maybe you can get your radiator brackets moved and re welded to gain some more clearance.

The rad is up tight to the rad support now. No room to move it further ahead. I found specs on a Flex-a-lite dual fan assembly that is almost two inches thinner than the SPAL one I have. I may have to order that one and try it. I don't rally want to go to a pusher fan if I can help it.

Thanks

Here is some motor sizes that may help. These are from custom auto radiator.

I called Spal a week or so ago to see if I could reverse the wires and use it as a pusher instead of a puller than it was designed and purchased as. They said you can not reverse a spal fan and to sell the puller and buy a pusher. Some brands you can reverse, but Spal says no!!
Spal does make the best though!!! Just my opinion!!

Black64, thanks for the chart. It will come in useful.

SRT8Challenger, that's kinda what I found out from tidbits off the Internet. Thanks for the confirmation.

Besides the problem that pusher fans will block air flow, I think I understand now why they are not generally as effecient. I mounted my SPALs as pushers(just for testing)and fed them power to reverse rotation. Although they blow rather well, the air blows out every crack and hole between the fans and the rad. I guess the rad fins act as a restriction and the air flow seeks the path of least resistance. So if you don't completely seal the fan shroud to the rad, you loose a ton of airflow. As a puller, I don't think this would be as much of a problem as long as you had a decent shroud.

Anyway, I spent a few hoours at the wrecker today and found a set of dual 11" fans and shroud from a '95 Contour. They fit my rad quite well and I can sqeek it by the power steering if I remove the decorative nose cone. Not sure what the airflow is on these but I'm going to give them a try.

Thanks for the input guys.
