What should it cost to recore a 22" radiator

What should it cost to recore a 22" radiator - 04/01/10 08:59 PM

I finanlly found an original 22" radiator for my 71 RT Challenger 383 4 speed car (standard cooling)
The radiator is is decent shape but I want to get it checked out.
I called a local radiator shop and was quoted $300-$400 for a 3 core recore.
It's been a long time since I had any radiator work done but that seemed high to me.
Normally I would look for a brand new radiator but this one is the correct numbers matching radiator so I would like to use it.

What's the going price for a 22" Mopar radiator recore job?

Thanks.

I had the one in my Nyker done a few yrs ago for about $175. 3 core hi-density Spectra core. I was getting brain dead quotes of $500-$700. You wouldn't believe the excuses I was getting for the outrageous prices, hard to get that core, have to order from a specialty supplier, custom built core might take weeks BS. I took it to my local shop, he measured it and ordered it from Spectra in Montreal before 3PM and I had it in the car the following afternoon. Even with the increase in the price of brass I can't see the job costing more than about $250. In any case it should be the price of the core plus about an hour of shop time.

I was looking at getting mine recored and they said it would be 300-400 just like yours. I think the materials and time are both pretty high on these jobs.

I can't speak to the price of the core because it's been a few years since had mine done but if you hand my guy a rad he can hand it back to you in about an hour with a new core in it. Just for comparison I put a new complete rad in my International 9400 5 yrs ago and the rad cost me about $750 cash and carry. I was at the MidAmerica Truck Show last weekend and I could have bought the same rad for about the same money.

Had 1 done in Bloomington IN 2 years ago. There's a place in Louisville KY that makes custom cores. Cost me $380 but they done a beautiful job. Looks just like original and doesn't have the solder globs all over it. Bob Jones radiator shop in Bloomington IN.

I know the feeling. Thats why i had to get another rad. Car had the wrong one when i got it. Put the correct fan and shroud reved it up and ripped the rad apart. Rad that was in car was a 1/2 shorter core then orignal.
