71 413 rings - 03/30/10 01:25 AM

so... i have a interesting question. i have a 71 413-HT. i need to pull a couple of pistons out to clean out the bore. my only problem is the rings. i dont want to re-ring the whole engine, just the two pistons i need to remove. my brother has rings that are the right diamater, the only problem is that they are about 1/64th too thin. is that going to be a problem, or can i get away with using those rings? thanks for the help!!

ONE 64ths ? ... that is almost 2 thou. When you put a ring in a piston ... what is the clearance spec?

Are these the dished truck pistons?

So they ARE dished? ...what is the ring groove clearance with the diff rings?

Gap or side clearance? If side clearance a 5/64" (.078") std width Mopar ring. 1/64 smaller would make an additional 15&1/2 thou side clearance on top of the several thou there now which would be way out of spec. For a low buck deal I'd try it. It wouldn't seal as good and I'm sure the up/down play would shorten the life of the rings/piston

i dont have the engine apart yet.. i dont want to tear it apart unless i know if these rings will work. im trying to low budget this engine, and then if it doesnt work i will rebuild it at a later date. im eventually going to turbo it (after it gets rebuilt of course!), but cant afford to buy a complete set of rings now. the clearance im talking about is side clearance. as in how thick the ring is. thanks!!

But BUYING single rings(in many cases) will cost you MORE than buying a set !!

And IF there is a TON of ring-groove-slop .. the motor will NEVER seal-up.
