V21 - Performance Hood Treatment

V21 - Performance Hood Treatment - 09/26/07 11:46 PM

We were discussing it in another thread. So I would like to know when it started and ended. Maybe we should try to post pics of all the applications. Of course the look would probably change on whether you had N96 or not, maybe other things too.

Here's a start, 1970 Challenger.

Here's the 73-76 Duster V21 treatment not seen too often. It's on my fendertag but was left off when the car was repainted many years ago. The little scoops were part of the Twister option only.

Not trying to change the subject here, but as a side note..
Those are also the same scoops used on the '69
'Cuda .

I have a 1972 Cuda with the V21 option on my data tag. I believe this was a 72 only option for Cuda's. Mine also came with a color keyed grill (which is not on the data tag??) and I do not have a build sheet.

Re: V21 - Performance Hood Treatment - 09/28/07 06:41 PM

Not to open a new can of worms, but when I bought my first '69 Road Runner (in October 1970), it had the V21 stripes, and they were in a flat-type black finish. Most, if not all, of the Road Runners I see nowadays have these stripes in gloss black. I purchased that car used, but I'm almost certain the previous owner hadn't changed it. The first time I ever waxed the car, I made the mistake of waxing the stripes. It looked pretty good. That is, until it dried. I taped off and sanded out the original and re-painted it with some rattle-can flat black and it looked great. That's probably why people go with the gloss black? I always thought the flat looked much better.

Re: V21 - Performance Hood Treatment - 09/28/07 07:06 PM

stripes are supposed to be flat black, actually textured organosol, the cars you have seen with gloss stripes are wrong.

Both years are painted with Organasol paint As you can see the 69 version is very different from the straight back stripes of the 70

Do all of the 'Cudas with PHP have painted grilles too?

EDIT: Nevermind, I see thw white one has an Argent grille...
Posted By: UCUDANT

Re: V21 - Performance Hood Treatment - 09/29/07 04:12 AM

I kind of wanted to know that too. I think it was only an option if you had the v21 treatment. Over the years some owners could have elected to paint the grille argent rather than original, or just used an argent replacement grille. I saw one with the lower grille body color and thats definately incorrect. Another item I find of interest is my lower grille turn signal lenses are orange except for a small clear rectangle in the center of the lense. Car was built Oct 71

Bob, your Chargers are AWESOME! We have to get together sometime - we are in the same town. You show me yours, I'll show you mine!

BTW, my '72 Cuda has the V21 hood blackout, but the orig. owner painted it white because of the AZ. heat. My car is gold, & the OE grille was the Sun Gleam Silver, not body color. I've never figgered-out just how you specified a body-color grille on a '72 Cuda, or even IF you could SPECIFY one???

Here's a listing of the colors: 72 ordering info- 72 'Cuda-grille colors

Parts book shows only one grille for the 'Cuda so maybe replacement grilles were argent?

I can believe that. Tough to guess how many came with V21 since you hardly even see 75 Road Runner's. But I'm sure not many were made with V21. How many did that make total?

I've seen a red w/black stripe one and a white w/gold stripe one at Spring or Fall Flings over the last ten years. Neither will blacked out hoods. But never did look at the fender tags. The white one could have been original paint though.

Well, where exactly is the best place to get the correct organsol paint? I know Year One NOW sells it for like 150.00 + for a quart. I need to repaint my hood. It was done in an egg shell enamel paint. Any one got any suggestions? I would like the correct texture and something that will spray directly over acrylic enamel paint. Had rather not use a primer but will if I have to. I have heard of some PPG paints that are close but some say use a medium thinner while others say a slow thinner.

Re: V21 - Performance Hood Treatment - 01/20/10 04:08 AM

In 72 you could order the V21, Performance Hood Treatment, the original owner of this Duster did just that....Also there were a few 340 Twisters built...they were for export only though, mainly to Canada. This decal was rolled up in the glove box upon delivery and installed by the original owner. The selling dealer was supposed to do this during prep, frustrated over it upon pickup he told them, "I'll just do it myself". This car was special ordered, check the code Y14 for sold car.........Dave

From the Cyber Cuda web page CYBER CUDA

KEY:

A = 20" UP from hood edge (nose side). 9 5/16" between red areas
B = 39" UP from hood edge (nose side). 9 9/16" between red areas
C = from bottom vent corner (passenger side vent hole; hole closest to middle of hood). 11 1/4" to red
D = 11 1/4" from hood lip (windshield side) to red. ** (Align togther with point 'C')
E = 9 3/16" hood lip (windshield side), going over 6th vent (from center of hood) hole
F = 9 10/16" hood lip (windshield side), going over 13th vent (from center of hood) hole
G = 10 10/16" hood lip (windshield side), going over 5th vent (from driver's side fender) hole
H = 15 3/4" from CORNER of hood lip (windshield side) to red ** (align together with point 'I')
I = 46" up from hood edge (nose side). 9 1/4" IN from hood edge (driver's side fender edge)
J = 36" UP from hood edge (nose side). 6 15/16" from edge to red
K = 25" UP from hood edge (nose side). 6 13/16" from edge to red
L = 13" UP from hood edge (nose side). 6 13/16" from edge to red
M = AT hood edge (nose side). 6 11/16" from edge to red

1 = 4" UP from hood edge (nose side). 6 11/16 from edge to red
2 = 21 1/4" - from edge to far side of first 'red' scallop
3 = 30 9/16" - from edge to near side of 2nd 'red' scallop (not pictured)
4 = 45 10/16" - from edge to far side of 2nd 'red' scallop (not pictured)
5 = 52 1/8" - total width of hood from driver's side to passenger side (not pictured)

# 3,4 & 5 are not shown on picture, but would be a continuation of the line between
points #1 & #2. This 'line' was measured starting at 4" above the hood egde (nose side)
Posted By: UCUDANT

Re: V21 - Performance Hood Treatment - 02/21/11 03:09 PM

Again from the Cyber Cuda web page

OUTSIDE AREAS (from outside edge of hood to 'red' scallops)
* = 7" wide at 40" UP from the front edge of the hood (closest to the nose). This is between the outer edge of the hood (on both driver & passenger sides) and the edge of the red scallops (just before the scallop curve begins).

6 11/16" wide measurement is at the front egde of the hood (closest to the nose of the car).

Here's a closeup of the Performance Hood Paint on my Charger.
It is coded for it but this was a mid 1980's repaint...not very correct.

I just went and checked my 72 6pack car and the hood is painted black behind the bubble and the cowl is also painted black inside the outline of the hood gasket.

This is V21 in 71-72. The Organisol on the louvered area:

That is NOT the correct Road Runner V21 treatment for 72.

This is the 72 V21, which was packaged with V25 decklid stripes (often NOT coded on the fender tag, depending on plant and broadcast date). It was only available on N96 cars, although some documentation indicates it may have also been available on Satellites. Never seen it on a Satellite.

Only 71s got the paint in the louvered area. On non-Air Grabber cars, it was the strobed pin stripes in the hood depression next to to the side facing call out scoops. No picture handy.

No slip on that car. Pretty common actually but there has been some debate on 71 N96 Roadrunners and GTXs. Seems pretty much all came with the paint behind the scoop. Since it was bundled with the N96, the extra code on the tag wasn't necessary. Some plants started leaving the code off.

Same thing with the 72 V21/V25 combo. Since V25 stripes always were packaged with V21 stripes, the code was redundant. Whether or not you got a V25 code depends on the plant and broadcast date. V25 is found on all V21 Windsor cars, but few St. Louis cars. Just saves space on the tag.

Actually, my experience with 72s is just the opposite, V21/V25 is coded on St Louis cars, but Winsor cars only had V21 on the tag.

As for 71s, I have to disagree with you on that too. I've been tracking these cars for a long time now. I have very early cars from all plants with N96 and no V21, and I also have very late build cars with V21 and N96 on the tag. There is no coding trend based on build plant either.
The car pictured was a two tag car, so there would be no reason to try to save tag space.

Whoops. I stand corrected on the 72. Just checked a couple of photos. My StL build car has a repro tag with no V25, so it threw me. I've seen a couple Windsor tags lacking the V25.

May have just depended on who was stamping tags on that day.

71 N96's are inconsistent for sure, both on the tag code, and the actual paint application.

My 1974 Plymouth Duster 360 4-speed.
It does not have a V12 code, but has 'J54 - Performance hood treatment' code instead.
Comparing to GOLDMYN's earlier post, it appears that the V21 code ended in model year 1973 on the Duster.

V21 - Performance Hood Treatment Organisol - 09/02/12 05:04 PM

I still need the blueprint for 1969 Road runner, which is not a charger

There is a lot of conversation of what orig organisol looks like...just remember organisol paint wears [easily] over time-this is not conjecture but from working with it for 35 years.

A couple of yrs ago I painted a Charger hood with real nos organisol. After 2 yrs of limited driving, a few washes and more than several swipes with a feather duster it is already changing from it's original texture. The only thing you can do to stop the wear is to put the car away in a hermetically sealed container and never touch the surface.

DDL 9355 is still available from most ppg paint supply houses. However the texture additive is NOT the same as from the 1970's but it's fine for todays cars unless you are going for the oe gold. You do not have to pay years ones inflated price if you buy direct.

And one more important bit of information
The DDL 9355 organisol paint over time wears down, period. I have lived with this paint for too many years now. So unless your 1970's vehicle with orig paint has been in a hermetically sealed container the texture and surface of the organisol paint will not be the same as it was when new.

Snoopy once posted this. It's from the 70 service manual. If anyone has a 72 service manual and can provide the same type info for the Cuda's V21 hood blackout I'd appreciate it.

I have the 72 Plymouth Service and Body Manuals but can't find reference to the V21. I thought the refinishing section of the body manual would have had it but no.

Where in the 70 manual did you find it? What section?

Mike.

I asked Snoopy and he said:

It was in section 23 Body and Frame. Look for Paint Charts, it is on page 179 of the 70 manual.

Bob,

Here is the page from the 72 Body Service Manual.

There is no reference to V21 or black organisol. I've gone through the entire manual.

See my next reply.

Mike.

Moparmike Thanks for taking the time looking through your manual. I also find the Satellite you posted above very interesting. The accompanying data you posted appears to show that the Fender hood (tank stripe) is only for RM23 cars, but NA with V21, V25, V8 stripes or Air grabber N96.

Another promo shot.

The broadcast sheet from Blaine Kelly's "Cyber Cuda" that car is currently for sale at Malcom Dodge in Peebles Ohio and Sharron Malcom was kind enough to share this with me.

What are the notes in the revision block? That drawing originated for the 71 model year (note the emblem and the decal). It looks like it references the 72 model year in the revision block, but I can't make out the notes.

On the print:
Under the word "organisol" - note the next line that sure looks like a paint code

Re: Engineering print 72 Air Grabber paint - 01/07/13 01:52 AM

Line C on the revision block says something like "C/OUT 1, 1971 ONLY ADDED"

Line D (top line) says "1972 something something" Driving myself batty trying to decipher it.

Line B also references 1972

Who's got a cleaner copy!?!?!?

Heres another shot to show the product I used to mimic organisol paint since the other shot did not seem to show it well. It's a planet color textured paint PCR2 http://www.planetcolor.com/color/detail.php?colorPartNumber=PCR2

The planet color PCR2 textured paint I used

Does tolerate wax, it does lessen the natural glistening effect the contours of the texture generate. The upper left corner of this test panel is waxed

That PCR2 paint looks really good. Here's my experience with Organisol paint. I ended up using DCC9355 urethane with texture/flattening agent/hardener added. Came out pretty good. Close as I could get to the old stuff.

Re: V21 - Performance Hood Treatment - 10/19/14 03:35 AM

Its actually a G36 coded car too so it should have the dual painted racing mirrors and painted grille . I found evidence of an earlier front end collision early in it's life (under hood has a P/N stamp and no body color paint, hood latch support unpainted, and a 71 un-slotted bumper)

Re: V21 - Performance Hood Treatment - 08/16/15 03:14 PM

As previously posted I also actually found a relocated California 72 TB3 V21 here in Alb NM, it has aftermarket mirrors and argent grille but upon inspection appeared to have had a minor front end collision (It had a factory replacement hood, underside was still black and it hasa P/N stamped on it, the hood latch support was also not painted) it's a G36 car built 8-71 so I'd say it had the color keyed grille. Since it's a V21 and I know of nothing that details how they were painted I just wanted to show what appears to be the cowl area in it's original condition not blacked out. If anyone has access to the factory diagrams that detail how these cars were painted I am seeking them

Thanks . . . kinda interesting that the Chrysler system still showed it as a 340 car (ordered in late fall 1973) . . . but then the shipped document showing the update with the 360 ! Owned for 32 years, put over 100k miles on it since rebuilding in 1984 . . . sold last year. Time for someone else to enjoy !!
