340 Intake Question Please Help - 03/24/10 02:11 PM

Hey guys,

I'm finishing up assembling my engine and I want to get a new intake. It's a mild 340, 30 over, purple cam, forged crank, 2.02 1.94 heads, Holley 750. Now I am changing the car over to a shaker car and I'm not sure what intake will fit better under the hood. I don't want the hood not being able to shut or be forced against the air cleaner. I want an aluminum intake for the weight difference. What intake should I use? Or what intake sits the lowest. I would rather put a spacer on than have one that's too tall. I want the one that's closest to stock so the hood will shut and will work best performance wise with my engine combo. I'm open to any suggestions if you don't like my examples below.

This is what I'm being told. What is your choice both the pros and cons. Thanks again

LD340
Weiand Stealth
Edelbrock Performer
Edelbrock Performer RPM
Rpm Air Gap

I always like LD340's if you can find one. But closest to stock intake is the Performer. It's also the cheapest and easiest to find of those.

I believe most of those come to the stock height though.

No one else has any info on the subject? Anything I can get is greatly appreciated. I just don't want to spend the $$$$ and it be too tall. Thanks

Quote:

purple cam Which purple cam as that's a generic name for mopar cams

LD340, Edelbrock Performer RPM, Rpm Air Gap All these are about the same, great intakes, IMHO
Weiand Stealth Good intake once you get the jetting quirks figured out
Edelbrock Performer I wouldn't use this one, I'd use a factory iron intake w/ a 1" spacer, before this intake.

There you go, some other input

As far as intake height and shaker, you'd need to measure the stock carb/intake height and figure out the max you can go. The LD, RPM, Air Gap and Stealth are all taller than the factory intakes, IIRC.

The SB street dominator intake is very low profile and can be bought regularly for $60-$75 but it does have 318 ports

i'm doing the same thing with a 360, using an eddy rpm airgap, definately the better intake for up to 6500-7000 and torque, stock intake height is around 4.5 to 5", rpm airgap is 5.35", so you would have to get a lowered air cleaner base(eddy or such)and fab it with a repro shaker base plate to lower the base plate about the same amount as you raise the intake, it can be done

To fit use M-1 dual plane forget the standard performer they are for 318s. The others listed are all good use a LD if you can find one

you said 2.02 / 1.94 heads... as in 1.94" exhaust valves??? really? How'd you fit them?

I like the way the Stealth and RPM Air-Gap perform(ed) on my 360, so Id go with either of those then tackle making the air cleaner fit right to the hood afterwards. Good luck!
