Muffler/exhaust pipe selection questions...

Muffler/exhaust pipe selection questions... - 03/22/10 03:19 PM

Application is a 440 in a Ramcharger.

I'm trying to shop around for my exhaust gear. I've already got headers, but the questions is, what muffler and pipe diameter do I go with?

I don't want something crazy loud or obnoxious. I don't mind a little grumble at idle but don't want it to kill me in the tin can of a truck that is my Ramcharger at highway speed.

I've used Dynomax Super Turbos before and like the way they sound. I had planned on running true duals and I've already got headers.

3", 2.5", 2.75"? Which one should I go with for the desired results?

Thanks a lot

If it were mine, I'd go with 2.25 or 2.50 diameter; the Dynomax Super Turbos aren't too loud, and I think the Magnaflows are comparable. I'd also run an H or X crossover.

2.5" mandrel bent, or 3" if compression bent (will be collapsed down to ~2.25-2.5" cross sectional area at bends)

mufflers, dynomax 17749 (2.5") or 17769 (3")

Re: Muffler/exhaust pipe selection questions... - 03/22/10 05:00 PM

I think the Super Turbos are too quiet.

The Dynomax Ultraflow and the Magniflow mufflers are a similar design.

I agree with 2.5" mandrel on a 440. It gets less critical as you near the back of the vehicle though because the exhaust gasses begin to cool and contract some.

H-pipe or X-pipe too. I've been told to use a crayon and draw a line on the exhaust pipe to find the placement of the crossover. Where the crayon quits melting off is where you should place the crossover for best performance. I've always just placed the crossover where it actually fit though. And the crossover of an H-pipe should be 75% of the diameter of the main exhaust line.

Re: Muffler/exhaust pipe selection questions... - 03/23/10 04:18 PM

So the concensus is 2.5" if the pipe is mandrel bent? I'd have figured 3".

I'm not so much doing this as a performance aspect, so I probably won't be bothering with an X or H pipe.

Is it possible to buy the mandrel U's and then cut them as I need them and join them in some way? Without a welder?

Thanks again,

Pat

I just got these what are same design than dynomax ultraflow... and they look very good built... and half of price

They look pretty nice. Have you installed them and run them yet? I'd be interested, except for the fact that I'd be concerned about the fiberglass internals rattling apart shortly after installing.

if it's a stockish 440, this would probably be sufficient....

there's no real good way other than welding, especially if you have to get creative on routing.

a quick google search brought up these guys...might want to talk to them....

http://www.maestromufflers.com/

since you're in AZ, aluminized is fine, if you were in a climate where road salt is used, I'd recommend 409 stainless.

Re: Muffler/exhaust pipe selection questions... - 03/23/10 04:48 PM

no, I haven't able to install them since I'm storaging stuff at Fl to be shipped intrenationally.

I was affraid also about the fiberglass, but thinking on Dynamax ultraflow are built on same way, why not try it!

beside that Dynamax ultraflow are as far I know and what I have read the best flow rated of everyone. And sounds deep, without internal drone as I could find at some videos ( there is a purple 69 charger around with those ultraflows )

I just could find one audio sample of these flowmonsters at youtube, and is a white silverado using same ones I got. Is not very good since you can heard a lot of the engine, being inside an exhaust shop, but gives you an idea.

I didn't want a NOSIY OR STUMBLE SOUND... simply something better than stock but making presence.

you can get these on anysetup you want, go directly to flowmosnter website, but this ebay seller has better prices than the website.

They have also chambered mufflers, and NICE STAMPED X pipes setups.

Ebay seller is VERY nice to deal with.

Of course the dynamax ultraflow is a comparision and a wish of the sound I want to get. Being built on same way and internal design, I don't think will be TOO MUCH DIFFERENT, maybe not exact, but somethin similar.

and you can't beat the price for those

The 440 in my 66 Coronet has 2.5" pipes with Dynomax "Hemi" Super Turbos (20" case) It has a real nice big block rumble at idle (I get comments at stop lights all the time) and at higher RPMs it's quiet enough so the intake howl can be heard and no droning.

I know this might sound like I'm asking a lot, but does anyone happen to have a recording of a big block infront of Dynomax Ultraflows? I'd consider them if I could hear them and determine they're not too crazy.

Dynomax's page has a sound sample thing, supposedly on a 502 crate engine. I'd like to hear the real deal if I can.

Re: Muffler/exhaust pipe selection questions... - 03/24/10 03:54 AM

I had ultra flows with an X-pipe and switched to Super turbos trying to quiet it down a bit. Its an 11:1 440 making some power. Although it may seem a touch quieter at idle that is the only place. Everywhere else its louder especially at highway speeds 2500-3000 rpm.

The x-pipe works well with a free flowing muffler like an ultra flow or a Borla pro XS( that is what is going on next). It may be a bit louder on side streets but upper RPM's much smoother.

3" will perform better but will be much louder. Use mandrel bends no matter what. The X pipe (highly recommended) is for noise reduction rather than performance. use some additional bullet type mufflers (resonators)in the rear tailpipes in addition to the main dynomax muffs. www.speedwaymotors.com I believe has mandrel bent U bends

Re: Muffler/exhaust pipe selection questions... - 03/24/10 12:10 PM

for a straight thru muffler, look at magnaflow. if you want reasonable loudness, use the largest muffler case you can fit. magnaflow has some 5x11x22" or so cases. they're also stainless.

Re: Muffler/exhaust pipe selection questions... - 03/24/10 05:09 PM

I would use 3" super turbos.

I would highly recommend a X pipe or at least a h pipe.

On a fullsize truck application, where would one put an X-pipe? Before or after mufflers. After transfer case? Above rear driveshaft? I'd love to hear some ideas.

Re: Muffler/exhaust pipe selection questions... - 03/24/10 07:04 PM

before the mufflers right after or before the transfer case.

Re: Muffler/exhaust pipe selection questions... - 03/24/10 10:21 PM

Missed that this was a truck app. W that kind of room you could probably use 4 muffs or 2 w larger cases plus some resonators/non restricted glasspacks of some type and be able get it quiet enough to suit your tastes as an X pipe MAY be difficult to practically achieve on a truck. I'd for sure go w 3" mandrel and make sure the tailpipes go all the way past the rear bumper

If its a stock-ish 440 even a compression bent 2.5" system will be fine
