Dodge Ram Troubles - 07/31/08 05:27 PM

Last night after getting off work I started my truck and the Brake light, ABS light stayed on and I noticed when I drove home the speedo will not work until I get to 28 mph. Anyone have any suggestions as to the problem. I have not done any recent work on the truck.
The vehicle is:
2000 sport Ram 2500 long bed 2wd V-10

Probably the speed sensor in the rear diff. its a cheap and easy (guess) repair, I would start there.

no suggestion?? I did for get to mention that is also takes longer to shift from 1st to 2nd.
I can see maybe a sensor for the ABS giving a fault code which in turn would cause the brake light to remain on also.... But it seem strange that the speedo all of a sudden not working until I hit about 28-30mph and the tranny not wanting to shift until higher rpm. It seems the speedo and tranny shift problem are not related to each other. I can cause the tranny to shift at lower RPM by lifting on the throttle a little. Where as the speedo will not work until a certian spped. I also notice it is a little erratic between 30-40mph and after that is ok. And when I slow down to 30 or below it just drops down to zero as if the power was shut off.
I guess they can all be unrealted problems that all happened at the same time. But seem funny that I drove to work no problems, then 6 hours later start the truck and now all this happens.
---any Dodge Dealer mechanics that have seen this before. I have a handy dandy Haynes repair manual but we all know what that is worth. Any suggestions would help. This happened last night and have not had a chance to take to a dealer.

Sorry just saw the reply.. I thought about that. The handy dandy haynes mentioned tha with Rear ABS (RWAL) the the sensor is mounted on the diff housing.

metal dust collects on the sensor and throws the sensor voltage reading off.

Would the speed sensor cause all these problems? I can see the ABS and Brake faults. Does the Speedo and Trans get speed input from that sensor also.

How else can the computers know how fast the rear wheels are turning.

True... I went to Napa online and they have a sensor at a store close to me. Cost is $37.39. Sound like a good inexpensive fix. Thanks ya'll for the help. This could have been a factor if I would be able to take my Runner to the NATs this year. Thanks agian...

Do it soon. My 99 speed sensor went and I drove it for a week like that. Next thing I know, the trans wouldn't shift out of first. New trans and speed sensor. Thank you WARRANTY !
