360 engine build ? help please - 03/12/10 11:20 AM

I'm rebuilding a 1976 360 that will have a
9.0 to 1 compression, a comp 262 to 268 cam,
or equivelent. a stock 4 barrel intake with
a thermoquad,or rpm air-gap with a
750 edelbrock,and headers. using this
set-up will aftermarket heads offer me any noticeable power gain over the stock heads?

Properly prepared stock heads will be fine. After-market heads might be better. Your weak link in your mix as stated is the Eddy 750. And for any engine build, choose your parts to best fit your real, most common driving style (street pounder, race car, slow cruiser, stump puller, etc.)

how are you getting 9:1 compression? stock pistons or stock type replacements will get you 7.7-8.2 compression with stock heads...

depending on what your heads need, it might be more economical to get a set of enginequest 318B heads....hughes has them new for $700/pr assembled with good springs, they flow about 30-40 CFM more than 1.88 valve smog 360 heads, and have a ~9cc smaller chamber, which will net you a .7 compression increase with the same short block over 360 LA heads.

I had a very good experience with a low compression (stock long block 360) with a comp XE262, eddie air gap, and an eddie 1406 600CFM carb.

What Patrick said and I would contact Demonsizzler for a thermoquad and use an intake w a spreadbore pattern either an oe iron 360 one or aftermarket alum

I'm getting my 9:1 by new pistons, machine work, head gasket thickness, (compression calculator).
I want to use 87 octane, and my stock stall convertor.

stock converter, I'd go comp XE256 or lunati voodoo 60401 for a cam.

my XE262 really liked the MP166K converter.

if it were me, and if the heads need to be redone anyway, I'd probably run KB362's, and these heads from hughes. I'd still stick to my cam suggestion, unless you go to a stock high stall or ~2300-2500 RPM converter.

Definitely don't go over a 600 or 625 car onthis thing, I would suggest also the Edelbrock thunder series carb, I believe it is 625 CFM, it works great on my 9.5 to 1 360 with 340 x heads and air gap intake, Car will run mid 13's with 3.23 gear. oH YEAH i HAVE A .509 cam also and is a stick car.

I'd suggest some KB pistons to get .040" quench which will take some more machine shop labor to mill/equalize the (open chanbered) head recesses plus milling the quench pads after you mock it up to check clearances but achieving quench will give you the most efficient long block w nothing left on the table especially w you wanting to use 87 and it will let you optimize your dist to get a better curve wo pinging and the ability to run enough advance is very beneficial
