Dr Diff i believe has a kit to run new style axles in them.Probally cheaper and easier to jut get a 65 to 70 B body rear. The 65 66 for sure are the narrowest.I believe 67 is also.Rocky

Talk to Dr. Diff. I think he has axles that you can cut to length. The bolt pattern on the axle flange is the same as the newer style bearing retainers. It seems to me you might have to grind a bit of the flange for the newer brake backing plates to slide over. Hardest part of the whole deal will be getting the old axles out.

I went with a 66/67 B rear.

It was the cheapest option for me anyway.
I think I paid 150 for the housing and axles.

One big problem is the taper set with shims.Newer axles set with the screw adjuster on the right axle.I know Dr Diff has a conversion. My 65 azle is under the kids 62 300.When we finally scrap the 66 Charger Ill save the rear from it also.Rocky

I've got one from a 66 Charger in my 64 Polara.
A little wider than the orig. but bolted right in. Spring perches are in the right location.
There are others that will work also,I just happened to have a friend with a Charger.

It should have been narrower than the original. I know mine was.

There are reference charts that show them being the same width, but when I measured my original, it was larger than chart said, and so was the one in my 64 parts car.

Got a 65 Ply rear in my 63 and it fit perfect. It seemed to be the same size as the stock rear that was in it. Ron

Well, I have an 8 3/4 rear end from a 66 Charger under my 64 Polara. Reason? I already had a 66 Charger parts car, so it was free.

I can't tell you if it is wider or narrower than the original, but, other than I think I had to change out one of the emergency brake cables, it bolted right in.

Let me clarify, it wasn't much narrower. Like 3/4 inch or something.
It was a straight bolt in. BUT definately narrower.

First I tried to use the axles only, and there wasn't enough contact area on the splines, cause the axles were a little shorter. Then went with the housing.

I'm sure we ALL agree that getting rid of the hassel of tapered axles, was a HUGE relief

Do you remember which cable you changed?
My drivers side doesn't release like it should,
thought I changed it,but maybe not.Do you remember what the cable you used came out of?
Thanks.

I have done the 64 to later axle conversion. The problem is that the housing is not machined to accept inner axle seals. You must run the green style bearing which does not require the inner seal. These bearings don't require the end play adjusters either. All you need are the correct length axles and green bearings. It's not a big deal.
