tin splash shield in oil pan?

tin splash shield in oil pan? - 02/24/10 04:38 PM

when i took the pan off my old 340 block there was a tin "splash shield" i call it, im thinking to make sure that when the crank is turning the oil doesnt splash all over the place and stays in the bottom of the pan. now i have accuired another block and put a stroker crank in it but it rubs on this shield. i tried denting the shield with a hammer everywhere the crank rubs but with little success. is this really what the shield is for, and do i need to put it back on? could i do without it, or do the make aftermarket ones specially for this?

It's called a windage tray. It's designed to keep excess oil from being splashed around on the rotating assembly. Keeps more oil in the pan, around the oil pump pickup to prevent starvation, and is supposed to free up a few hp supposedly.

They are available aftermarket.

Yhays not really a windage tray.The tray bolts to the mains on a SB.Thats a baffle to control slosh in the pan.Rocky

so is it a big deal if i dont put it back on with my stoker crank? or should i try and find an aftermarket one....?

I'd run one and if you can't get the stock one to fit, I am sure there is someone out there making them for the stroker.
Here is what I found in my Big inch Mopar small blocks book.
Windage is a loss of engine output due to excess oil getting in the way of the crankshaft and connecting rods.
Windage is a major problem on a stroker engine
since as the stroke getslonger, the crankshaft gets closer to the walls of the block and windage losses are increased.
I testing with a 408 stroker engine the typical losses due to windage are about 42 HP without the a proper windage tray.
