Hey electricians-UPDATED W PICS

Hey electricians-UPDATED W PICS - 07/27/08 05:15 PM

I am trying to wire a old fan up to help exhaust my paint booth. My old one died. I have a newer mod fan, squirre cage type that has a junction box and many different types of wires. I attempted to use the white and black like my old fan, but it just hums and goes no where.
There is also a red wire, I believe a blue wire, yellow and then two brown wires that went to some sort of selenoid thats now gone.

Any ideas. I just want it hard lined in and want to by pass the selanoid if possible.

Thanks

Maybe it was a Capacitor that is missing. Do you have a pic of the nameplate?

So It will not work using high and common. so i guess I have to run it through the capactor or I cant use it????

Thanks

Does your old fan have a capacitor in it? Mybe you can use it if it is compatible.

The browns go to the run cap, and it must be the correct value for the motor, within reason. Be sure to use a RUN cap not a start cap. "Most" of the time, start caps are black plastic, and run caps have oblong or round metal shells

Also I would NOT use black. (High speed.)

At least check the nameplate, and measure amperage draw. This sounds like an old furnace fan, which is designed to run against ductwork, which, believe it or not, LOWERS the amperage draw. Most furnace A/C fan/ blowers, when run with no ductwork, will "overamp"

I'd use white and red. I've done this with several fans for my friends, over the years, and usually, even on low speed, these will tend to draw max. amps with no ductwork attached.

Be sure to tape up unused wires!!!!

This is the fan in question. The capacitor is with this one but when turned on, it ONLY HUMS.
This is another fan I used to use but when it started only humming, I switched it out or tried too.

Here are two pics. So if I can find a capacitor, then my troubles should be over? The numbers appear to be

#97F5705 ????? VERY HARD TO READ AND FADED.

Thanks for the help guys. I have a swap cooler in teh same door, that heads inwards for A.c When I am not using the paint booth. i just turned it around to it vents instead so I can get some primer down on moparts YOUNGUNNERS hood so he can get it blocked out so we can get it painted this coming weekend.

I ordered two of the capactors off of ebay. I believe they are the same number and size for both my other fans. One was enought but now I hope to have two working to expell it faster.

Thanks again as I dont know capacitors or home electrical outside of wiring plugs and pullign wiring for my shop ect.
