how to paint up non stock 426 hemi??? - 02/19/10 07:39 AM

before lone im gonna have to paint our non stock hemi and would like some ideals maybe even some pics on how you did yours
the motor has alum heads(twin plug) mag valve covers tunnel ram (alum) alum water pump and housing that have been painted clear and a clad plated (gold) oil pan 2 3 inch tall k/n 6 pack style filters(have yet to order) and a6 pack lid
the heads,intake,waterpump,oilpan im leaving as they are but what about the block?? paint it orange and the lid? paint the block black? dont think a grayish color will look worth a crap will be going into a nicly painted plum crazy purpple 74 challenger

I would do everything orange except a textured black for the valve covers.

Just my

I painted my Buick's 455 block black - having shine it always looked like it had oil leaks, and if it did I couldn't have told where they were coming from with that color.

Since its clearly non-stock (and ), I'd consider the later "smog" blue Chrysler used. I used it on my 383 and I think it would make a great compliment too a purple engine bay.

It's a tough call with all the cast finish aluminum and magnesium.

Black won't show up very well IMO.

Purple might be okay with the amount of bare looking cast finishes.

Silver may be another option, but usually I trim the engine in black then (valve covers, etc.)
The color silver "pops" (stand out) when you put in in a purple engine compartment.

I know, not a Mopar engine but it's a silver engine in a purple car.

Street Hemi orange would probably be my first choice though.

To me the engine needs to contrast to the body color to make it stand out some, like a tunnel ram Hemi isn't going to stand out.

I'd paint it all orange except the carbs and pullies(leave those black)! To make it look a bit different from the rest, go with Race Hemi Orange, it's a lighter/brighter orange than Street hemi Orange and will give it a larger than life look. In fact, if the picture is not over exposed, your engine block looks to be Race Hemi Orange right now.

Either way I'd lose the Fram oil filter.


I have a thing for aluminum so I like to show it off and not paint it - must come from being friends with 340six.

Direct, personally I agree, but only if the entire engine is aluminum. Since bolt on alloy stuff is more common these days than iron I wouldn't start bragging/showing it off until it was all mounted on an alloy block as well, you know, the whole 9 yards so to speak. THEN I'd let the Reynolds Wrap shine! Otherwise it's just another iron engine with alloy heads and intake....(insert sleepy face Gaemlin face here).

Double plug aluminum hemi heads? Doesn't get much better than that around here regardless of the block's composition.

I tried to find (but can't) a pic of an old school dual-dizzy hemi'd car that came to a local car show I had my Duster at.

i would like to swap out the mag. valve covers for some duel plug sheetmetal covers but dont know if they make them(never seen any) they looked good when i first had them polished but now just dull gray
this is going into the wifes challenger and she likes to take it to our local car show so it need to be apealing to the eyes

Powder coat them with a translucent color. My valve covers look way deeper than anodized in person - translucent blue powder coating over chrome covers. Something different and cheap to do.

Just my lowly opinion, so take it for what it's worth, but I think it would be a LOT nicer and far more appealling if you had a cohesive "theme" for it. As it sits now, it is a nice engine but just looks like parts were strewn together with no thought to the final out come. It's just a garish mismatch. Study some of the top car builders like Steve Stropes of Pure Vision, or even Foose, and notice all the little details and tricks they use to really make an engine shout at you while looking classy and elegant, like a well thought out package. Thats WAY to nice of an engine you have to leave it 10 differant colors that none match the others. I can't suggest a color because I don't know what your tastes are, but please study what the pro's do to make their stuff look classy and steal their ideas. Most of them went to art or designing schools at some point. Sometimes the things most remembered aren't shouted, they are whispered.

While I havent done much looking into it, I am throwing around the idea of powdercoating my heads and block. Has anyone done this with iron? Is it ok to do? Looks like yours is altogether and you're probably not willing to do that. Just thought I would chuck the idea out there though.

Either way, finish-wise, I would suggest a very bright red candyish color that pops nicely when the light hits it. That way it matches the red of the ignition components you already have, still allows you to scope out any oil leaks, and will look badass.

I'm doing the red base, black and raw aluminum theme throughout on my 425 in a dakota that will be all "hotrod black" outside.

I vote for Race Hemi Orange with either black or cast iron color accessories.

Magnesium is a pain to maintain if you want to keep it looking pretty.

Street motor ? What cam is in this motor for street use using those 2 mags, big carbs, and tunnel ram intake ? Automatic I assume,what converter are you going to use ? What compression ? Looks like a nice motor for show purposes in the Challenger.

The cam is a small roller in the 600 range,the mags are empty just deliver spark,have a msd 7al box,compression is 11 to 1,got a 3500 stall,stock bore stock stroke,aluminum rod,rotating assembly has been balanced,should be a nice street motor.Do you still have the yellow AAr? Do you have any pics of it? still have the hemi in it?

Thats a lot of engine on such a little engine stand. Be careful moving it around.

I would be different and paint it the Chrysler Turquoise Blue. I always liked that color and I think it would really set off your engine and the car's color combo. I would leave the valve covers and heads their natural color, paint the block and air cleaner the Turquoise Blue.

I have a severe dislike for ANY shade of orange on ANY engine.




I went with a different color.... a burgundy but when it's all together it can't be seen much...??



With the front end on it's even harder to see any block color...

You want the color to stand out in the engine bay. I have a red car and painted my motor hemi orange. Does not look good at all, the motor doesn't stand out one bit. Will go a different color this time.

I also vote for later model Chrysler "Turquoise". I think it looks super clean and besides, everyone and their mother paint the hemi orange. Dare to be different and non-correct.

I've had problems with the MP/VHT turquoise changing to the pukey yellow/green when antifreeze got on it. My 1969 340 was that color from the factory, but that is the last engine I'll paint with that color.

How about 273 red? Put one some black valve covers and stick on some aluminum fins and try to convince everyone it's a 273 HiPo. I've been trying to get HemiFred to paint the Hemi in his S&M Duster with the Phord Blue like Jake used to paint them.

The intake, valve covers, waterpump housing, air grabber parts,,pullys, and much more is powdercoated on my motor..Take into consideration that things like bolts that will be torqued down will chip off the powdercoat easily..

the only thing that is gonna get painted is the block and the air cleaner lid and oil pump the valve cover i will take back to the polisher and then bring them home and hit them with some hi temp clear (the valve covers are mag.i dont think i could bring my self to paint it blue
so far im thinking either hemi orange or some sort of cast iron gray color or a charcoal gray??
