Brake pad recommendations for Viper brake conversion?

Brake pad recommendations for Viper brake conversion? - 02/19/10 03:39 AM

Okay, I'm down to the last bits and pieces for my early Viper caliper/11.75" conversion on my Dart. Got the spindles, got the ARE adapter kit, got the rotors, got new bearing, caliper bolts, seals, and even new dust caps. All that's left are the hoses, pads and pad hardware. Anyone have any recommendations as to a suitable pad. I'm thinking maybe Baer DecelaPads. Or maybe OEM Mopar? The Baer stuff doesn't come with the pad hardware and I can't find a separate source for it. Any suggestions?

For street driving I'd go with the OEM Mopar stuff. For racing maybe step up to a slightly higher temp pad.

If you check on a Viper forum you might find a different recommendation. Some folks really like the EBC pads for example.

Thanks, I was leaning OEM Mopar 'cause it gets me the hardware, too.

We road race with OEM pads and don't have any issues. This isn't super serious class racing but the car is still doing 120+ mph each lap before slowing down to 40 or 50 for a tight curve. That is fairly heavy use of the pads and the OEM stuff seems to hold up fine.

I'd suggest running OEM stuff until you prove that it isn't working (fade) and only then step up to an aftermarket pad. I'm guessing that the OEM pads have more engineering time invested in them and are built to higher quality standards than any of the aftermarket pads.

Matt, are you putting that stuff together soon? I'd like to see that Viper stuff in person up close before you install it.

You wouldn't happen to have the part # for the pads would you? I've had some miserable experiences with my local dealers. If I ask them to look it up I may end up with pads for a '84 Dodge Aries.

Did you call Troy (805) 578-8144 over at Simi Dodge? He will personally take care of you. You can PM him here too.

I've heard OE SRT-8 Brembo pads are big bucks like that. Doesn't surprise me.

If that's the case I may have to go aftermarket. The Baer pads are only 56 bucks from Summit. I just gotta figure out where to get the pins and anti-rattle clips.

I recommend EBC yellow pads. Excellent cold bite and phenomenal hot bite.

Troy,

Maybe you can help. Is there a separate part number(s) for the pad hardware? I need the pad retaining pins and the anti-rattle clips.

That's one down side to my big AMG brake conversion. The pads retail for $276. The rotors are $376 each.
I need to keep my job at Mercedes to help pay for those things.
