Help with pt cruiser rear drum removal - 01/30/10 05:21 PM

Having trouble with removing drums on pt cruiser, whats the trick? I saw somewhere online that you have to remove the bearing nut and pull the hub with the drum, is this correct?

thanks

No that's not right. According to my manual you just back the adjusters off enough to let the shoes back off. It comes off just like any standard drum. Here's a great place for PT info. http://www.ptcrew.com/?sid=b85f0a589450e7692227b57d25d8db59

Autozone repair guides.
Drum doesn't have a hub on it so it should be able to be tapped off once the brakes are loosened.

Removal & Installation

Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
Remove or disconnect the following:

Rear wheels Rubber plug from the top of the brake support plate (backing plate)

Insert a small prying tool through the adjuster access hole and engage the teeth on the adjuster wheel.
Rotate the adjuster wheel so it is moved toward the front of the vehicle. This will back off the adjustment of the rear brake shoes. Continue moving the adjuster wheel toward the front of the vehicle until it stops moving.

They usually stick where the drum registers on the hub. Some good penetrating oil around the hub and a few good smacks on the drum flat where it sits by the hub and most will come right off.Rocky

Those darn drums on that car were stuck worse than any I've worked on. They did finally give up and came off.

thanks for all the help
