Carrier bearings - how to remove?

Carrier bearings - how to remove? - 01/26/10 12:34 AM

I have a clutch-style SG carrier that needs the bearings removed. Looking at the FSM, they picture a special tool needed to remove them, but there's no way I'm going that route - anyone have a simple way to get them off? I have already pulled off the cages and rollers on the one with a gear puller, but the inner race is still locked prety solid on the carrier. I was thinking about a little heat from a propane torch and some P-oil, but I don't want to ruin anything either. There is very little for any puller to get a hold of, as they were pressed all the way down to the base of the carrier flange. I was going to get a dull chisel and alternate blows all around after heating until it moved enough for my puller to get a hold of the lip. Any ideas?

Press to put on, and to take off.

You can cut a slot in the race and used a chisel to break the race, once the race has a crack in it, it will fall off, but once you get it off how are you expecting to install the new one?

Here is a puller that works on 8-3/4 and Dana power loks (clutch)since the case has a puller groove machined behind the bearing. I don't know if the cone type has this groove. This is a Miller SPX tool.

You still need one of these with that tool

and it won't install the bearing either

My case has no puller groove behind the bearing race - it fits tight against the shoulder of the carrier. Mine is a spicer-type unit, I believe.

Split the old with a cutoff wheel and/or a chisel. Then it'll come off easy.

No press needed to install either.

Heat the bearing in a electric frying pan, and drop it on with a welding glove. Have a punch ready in case it hangs up, so you can give it a tap if needed.

no you don't. That puller does the job without anything else. I've used it dozen of times. Installing the bearing is no issue. Using a hammer and the old inner race, big socket, piece of pipe etc will do that job.

Boy the things you forget when you have tools for just about everything.

So i'm stuck buying or borrowing one of these specialty tools to get my bearings off? I could try and chisel a groove and spit it open, but aren't they a tough steel to work with? A cutoff wheel would work a little better, but the chance of going too deep and scoring the carrier ends to me seems too much of a possibility. Could I mig weld two "perches" to the race and use them as something for my puller to grab hold of? Or is that still too much heat for the carrier?

If it is really a problem to remove I would try this, although it has been a while since I've gone to a NAPA or a mom or pop shop in a long time for press use but they normally charge very little ($15 or less) to pull and install bearings with their press. Otherwise carry it into a dealer and normally a tech can pull it off for you for a $10 or a $20 spot.

When making the cut with a cutoff wheel you do not have to make the cut perpendicular to the base of the race. You can cut a diagonal. A nick on the carrier should be ok just deburr it if you do.

Personally, I cut into the race with a cutoff wheel, then use a chisel in the cut to split it.

You won't score it if you're careful.

If you score the carrier, it is really not a big deal. The race doesn't spin on it, it is pressed on. A mark in it will not affect it. Just make sure it isn't burred or it'll stop the new one from going on properly. Touch it up with a few file strokes, and it should be fine.

You can try the welding thing, but the inner race is pretty hard stuff. I guess as long as the race comes off when you done, then you've done it right.

You did not read the op's first thread, he pulled off the cage and rollers, so there is no cage to grab onto anymore.

Depending on the interference fit I normally will not go banging on any bearings to install them.

Thanks guys - at least I have a few options to choose from now. I think I'll try the wheel/chisel first and if that doesn't do the trick, I'll weld some "ears" on each side and use that to pull it off with. Just a shame the factory couldn't have put a recess in there for a regular puller to work. Guess they thought that if it lasted 7-10 yrs or so it was good enough.

I have one of these:

It works very well.

Wow, how does something like that work? Without instructions I would never of thought it removed bearings.

Sorry I could not wait. I have a small fetish for tools.

Wrong again. That tool doesn't require that the bearing has a cage or rollers since it grabs the inner race so that the bearing can be reused like when setting diff bearing preload on a Dana.

Best tool ever, if it's the same I'm thinking of you can do a ton of different bearing setups with it.

This is one of those things you would have to show me, without the cage and rollers your tool does not have a shoulder to grab onto.

your tool

similar tool in action with cage

Op mention not having a case that has a puller groove machined behind the bearing

Show me it happening without the cage.

Re: Carrier bearings - how to remove? - 01/26/10 05:52 PM

i think if you were to be grabbing the cage with that puller, you'd detroy the bearing by twisting the cage in to a pretzel.

you need to get the fingers of the puller onto the inner race or else

In an ideal world you're correct but pulling on the cage will most often remove the bearing without any damage to the cage.

no, maybe not an ideal world. but it does seem to be the case in my world. every time i go and fix something, there are unintended casualties

Re: Carrier bearings - how to remove? - 01/26/10 10:37 PM

Since the op has a cage and rollers missing this is another alternative if he can get a hold of the correct tools.

Have the bearing tool clamped down on the race lip where the rollers used to ride up against.

I think you can also buy this tool at harbor freight, just don't expect to do production work with it.

Re: Carrier bearings - how to remove? - 01/26/10 11:16 PM

Make sure you use a good grade of high pressure grease on the puller threads or you could gall the threads and ruin the puller.
Been there, done that.

yup, i toasted a HF puller using it the first time. no lube or anti seize

I use anti-seize on the puller threads.
