73' Satellite trim question

73' Satellite trim question - 01/23/10 08:31 AM

Is there a special name for the piece of trim attached to the rear bumper? It's the long piece that runs the length of the bumper located between the bumper and the trunk... I'm searching everywhere online for a replacement piece and I'm having trouble finding it.

Yep...it's a bumper filler and it's not repopped by anyone. Good luck finding one. Your best bet is to find a decent original. Sorry.

Yep, usually called a bumper filler strip and finding a good one is near impossible. Junk design to begin with and crappy material. Mine was also shot so I took it off and have just been living with the extra gap.

seems like it would be a pretty simple piece to repop, and I bet the demand would be there. I wonder why no one has stepped up to repop those

Actually There was a Guy that had several made. They looked pretty good in the pics. I saw them on here or ebay when I was redoing my '73 RR about 18 months ago. He had them for a while. Mine was very good shape so I did not buy one.

The center filler has a step in it and also has an internal metal "c" channel that runs the length of the piece...The C channel fastens to the top edge of the bumper and holds it in place...That piece would be a pricey part to manufacture...So when you're on the boneyard hunt not only does it first need to be straight but the metal c channel needs to be intact or there's no way to keep it on the bumper...

...I gave up on finding a suitable piece that was'nt made of gold and made up my own...

Heck, even if someone made one where the middle section was held onto the bumper with double sided adhesive tape I'd be happy!

Yes, somebody out of Ohio I think.
They even had some repops on ebay about a year ago.
the guy had a company do a small run. When I found them on ebay, there were only bleemed ones remaining.
I kick myself for not buying one, but I had no idea what the quality was. I think they wanted $150 bucks for them too.

Good luck finding them. Just about everyone with a 73-74 satellite 2 door and R.R. needs one.
Mines is weathered badly and no longer straight but it is better than nothing.

I even put it on my Christmas list one year for gags and everyone in the family was looking for one. I almost got one from a 72 from someone because thats all they could find.

Very hard to repop correctly. The guy went through several runs before he got one he liked and had racked up the bucks trying to do it, then gave up I think cause he didn't like the final outcome completely.
Some of my detatils here may not be correct as I am doing this all from memory.

The ones on Tony's site are probaly the outer ends, cause he says fillers "plural".

He ALSO lists one for a front. I wonder what that could be, as there are no rubber fillers on the front.

maybe someone could just make shorter mounting brackets, and tuck the bumper up close to the body

I was thinking about that also and did the mock up...But when you move the bumper in the side width looks way off compared to rest of the gaps... For the rear bumper to look right going that route you'd need to section the bumper in the center and lose a few inches off the width and pull the ends in closer...

Also, when you move the bumper in, you find there's a gap on top of and below the bumper, like the bumper's not tall enough for the space it's supposed to fill. They designed that bumper with that damned filler strip in mind and there's no way to get around that very easily, so I just live with the gap.

Wish I would have heard about those repops back then, I would have been all over that.

Found my old one in storage. It's VERY wavy... I got weights on it trying to straighten it out right now. I'll paint it up and maybe silicone it to the bumper?

I made one very similar........got 1/4" x 1 1/2" x 8 Ft PVC from Lowes and painted it with Fusion paint....looks pretty good.

the bumper filler on the front is aluminum, one piece under each headlight.
