MSD 8546 Distributor Questions - 07/23/08 04:12 AM

The 440 on the wagon is getting this distributor and a 6AL box. The motor is a forged flattop piston, Edelbrock RPM aluminum heads, with Max Wedge Intake and two 450 Holleys. Cam is Purple Shaft 509/292. Need a guess on where to set the advance curve on this distributor or how to figure out the best way to determine it. Any help appreciated.

I'm running a 494 4 speed. I have the same setup as you (dist/6AL). I'm running the middle silver and blue spring in the advance, that gives me all the advance by 2K. I also went with the black advance stop. for a total of 20 degrees of dist advance. I set my engine a 14 dgrees BTDC and this gives me 34 degrees of total advance at 2K. BUT this works on my engine which runs very cool, a hot engine would be difficult to start with that much initial advance. The dist out of the box will work great, I'd play with that and chnage springs till you are comfortable, BTW I also run a Autometer A/F gage in the car I'm running two Carter Competition AFBs for a total of 1300 cfm and keeping them within limits is fun. Have fun - Do you make the COMA show in OKC?

It has good and bad years, this year the cost of fuel keep some vendors away, but the cars where nice. On your distributor, I kept burning up the cyl 6 and 8 spark plug wires, Im running Dougs 2" headers into 3.5 inch collectors. I finally went with Jacobs spark plug wires and I love them, plus no more burnt wires. Good luck with your ride.
