Question about 67-72 A-Body Kelsey Hayes Disc Brakes. - 01/19/10 01:21 AM

Some of you may know that i have been completely rebuilding the 4 piston Kelsey Hayes disc brake set up's that were optional equipment on the 1967-72 A body line of cars.
When i get done with them, i sell them on e Bay.
The current set that i have listed is the 10th pair that i have listed in the past 2, 2 1/2 years.
Anyway, someone keeps insistantly e mailing me that you could get disc brakes on the A body cars in 1965 and 1966 also as dealer installed optional equipment.
Is this guy bull shooting me, pulling my leg, or in general a guy that think's he's a know it all.
I never heard this before.
Anyone know if this is true or false? Must have a lot of A body gurus out here on Moparts.
Any factual references to back up his statement, if it's true?
Thank's in advance.

I looked at a 66 Dart wagon years ago that was stock down to the hubcaps, no sign of any changes and it had front disc. But I have no real info.

http://musclecars.howstuffworks.com/classic-muscle-cars/1965-1966-plymouth-barracuda-273.htm

I found this on the internet when i was searching for information.
It does go on to say that dealers were installing disc brakes on the 1965 Barracuda Formula S cars.

Well if that's the case, anyone out there have a 65 or 66 car with disc brakes, that you know is correct, and not a changeover swap?

I have always thought they came out in 1966 and my factory 1966 service manual lists them. But doing a quick search it appears they were available in 1965.

Same here, saw them on an unmolested '66 A and was always my understanding that they were available in '65 though dont know if that was out the door or dealer installed. Since you are marketing them I see no reason they couldn't be retrofitted to 63-64 A bodies also. Wouldn't be OE but it might increase your market.

Jim, I answered your question over on BBD, but I'll answer it here, too. I have seen the window sticker of a 65 Formula S with disc brakes listed, so at some point in the 65 model year they became a factory option. My old 66 Barracuda also had them and was very original (although a bit tired) when I got it in 1980 (I knew the guy who bought it in 1975).

Gentlemen, thank you for sending me to disc brake school on the A body cars. Lots of good professors here.
Next time i advertise them, i will be changing my heading to read 1965 - 1972.

Pretty much...... (except the inlet is in a different location). They even use the same wheel bearings.

Since my current listing didn't have an opening bid yet, i was able to change the heading to read 1965-72, and ad a better description to all the cars, and years they are used on.
Thank's again Jim Lusk, and all my "teachers" here on "Moparts"

Re: Question about 67-72 A-Body Kelsey Hayes Disc Brakes. - 01/19/10 09:50 PM

Disc brakes became optionally available in A-bodies late in the 1965 model year. Cost to buyer was about $90.

They were a factory production item, not dealer installed (not to say that some dealers couldn't have converted some factory drum-brake cars).

The 65-66 setup used a single master cylinder with a pressure limiting valve to the rear brakes.

At least one magazine - Speed & Custom Magazine in its October 1965 issue, on sale beginning July 28, 1965 - did a road test of a 1965 Barracuda with factory optional disc brakes.

The June 1966 issue of Car & Driver magazine has a road test of a 1966 Barracuda with disc brakes.

In any event, they are a bolt-in item for all A bodies back to 1962.
