Here is Combo....
'71 440 Block .30 over
All neccesary machine work/ fully balanced
Block square decked
Ross 99539 pistons/ 2.065 Comp. Height
New Scat Rods
Full Grooved mains/HV Oil pump
Lunati 60304 cam/lifters
440 Source stealth heads/Crane Ductile adjustable rockers, bushed by RAS/ Bananna groove shafts
Holley SD intake
Holley 750 DP
1 7/8 headers/ 2 1/2 pipe / with H pipe
MP Ignition
3.91 gears

Question 1.. What kinda idle will this cam (Lunati)produce. I would like a nice lope at idle.

2.. Would I be better off with a solid cam?..or stay with a hyd?? Why??
I was told with the Crane ductile adjustable rockers I could use a solid.
I want a nice street motor with as little maintainance as possible. No drag racing.

I have the 60304 in a 440. Its not a real lopey cam--the duration is about 268/274. Its designed to provide good lift (.493/.513) while still having a good idle.
Gone are the days when you HAD to have a lopey idle to get great midrange/upper end power.

The old MP 280 .474/.474 cam I had before was noticeably lopier (is that a word?) than the Lunati

BTW--the 60304 is a great 2000-6000 rpm cam!

You are describing the 60303 which has 493/513 lift, the 60304 is 513/533 lift. I run the 60303 and the idle is tame in it when piped through my full 2.5" dual exhaust system. Open the header cutouts and it sounds nice and aggressive.

In all honesty the 60304 is a mild enough cam that adjustable valvetrain is a waste. If you're already got the cam and adjustable rockers, run it. If you haven't bought the cam yet, I would go with a solid instead.

The 60404 should have some lope 234/242 duration @ .050 (and that is the number that counts)

Pacs 226/234 is too mild for much lope thats why his MP .474 which is 238/238 @ .050 gave him more lope.

that Hydraulic is fine what Torque converter you going to use?? a 3000 and a 60405 242/252 installed at 104 (even 102) would kick but and have a nice lope both 04 and 05 will require re curving the dizzy! IMHO

Never messed with a solid cam. Will it help the performance of the engine. More maintainance??
What are the advantages and disadvantages of the solid over the hyd.??
I do not have the cam/lifters yet. Rockers are in the hands of RAS as I type this!

I was going to call PTC when I get the cam sorted out and see what they recommended.

Well a sold cam revs higher and will usually make a tad more power. put locking nuts on the adjusters and if locked tight once set its a once twice a year check after they have been set right. Shaft Mopars do not move around at all.
I think I would look at what you were thinking the 60404 (maybe the 60405)

If you go with a solid cam you may want to invest in a lifter like this

three bolt but available in 1 bolt if you already have a 1 bolt timing set

or a tad milder three bolt

Like said, solid cam will rev higher and not see a drop off at higher rpms like a hydraulic will. Since you already have the adjustable valvetrain I would go with the mp .557 cam. It will definitely give you the lope you want. I think there's a few youtube videos where you can hear how that cam idles. A solid like that is not going to be overly high maintenance, just check the valve lash once or twice a year.

Moparrulzzz, your combo is nearly identical to the one I am building now. Same heads, cam and valve gear with the pistons set at 0 deck height for quench.

Something to look out for. I set my valve lash this past weekend and noticed all 8 of my pushrods slightly rubbed the upper part of the intake runners when the lifter was on the base circle (3/8" pushrod). After marking the heads I pulled them off and hit them with a Dremel.

Also, 440source recommends the locks get upgraded to 10 degree locks when you get above .510 lift, which I did. The machinists was very impressed with the Stealth heads.

Thnx for all the info guys.I think for now I will stick with the Lunati 60304.
I don't know why the solid makes me nervous, I think it may be the lack of experience with a solid!!

I am running an Edelbrock Performer RPM with a Holley 3310 750.
