Setting valve lash on 440 hydraulic w/adjustable rocker

Setting valve lash on 440 hydraulic w/adjustable rocker - 01/16/10 01:25 AM

I would appreciate being schooled on the proper way to set the valve lash on a 440 I am building.

I am using a Lunati Voodoo hydraulic cam with crane adjustable rocker arms. I put the lifters in without filling them with oil per the Mopar Performance book (the Don Taylor book said to fill them which I can go back and do). I have the correct pushrods for the adjustable arms.

I have a dial indicator and I did put timing tape on the dampner with #1 at TDC.

I also checked the cam after install with a degree wheel. It was dead on the Lunati spec at 106 degrees.

Thanks for any help.

I'll give it a try.
First off; Do you have a big block or small block?
It's a lot easier if you have the intake off and, if a big block, have the valley pan off to be able to see the cam and lobes.
You want to start with one number cylinder just for S.A.G's. Jog the engine 'til the lobes of the cam are off of the lifter. (On the flat of the cam lobe). Either exhaust of intake, it doesn't matter.... Looking very closly at the lifter, loosen the adjuster then tighten it until the push rod just starts to depress the lifter piston. Then thighten 1/2 turn more. Do the same, with the same proceedure, for the other 15 valves.
I hope this helps.

Which voodoo cam are you running?

68LAR, it is a 440 with the intake and valley pan off. This sounds fairly simple. Thanks.

Daytona it is the 60304 .513/.533 going into a 4-speed. Actually, I listened to you as I was going to run the 60303 but through out wwyd with a 4-speed.

Thanks,

Unless your spring pressures are crazy high, I would run stock rockers with that cam instead. The money you spent on the adjustable setup is wasted on a cam as mild as this. The 304 cam should do you well, if I didn't have such low compression ratio I would have went with the 304.

Spend your money where it will be cost effective.
If you are set on using an adjustable valve train make sure that you have the lifter on the base circle of the cam when adjusting and as for filling the lifters most cam companies do not recommend filling prior to installing.

I had the block cut for 0 deck height. I got a good deal on used adjuctable rockers and pushrods. I have them and will use them.

Thanks,

.......also good that your using the dial indicator to set TDC at intial set up, also time to confirm your vibration dampeners location, I prefere using a degreed, or Mr Gaskets timing tape on the dampener, makes life easy, set the cylinder in question to zero lash, add no more than 1/2 turn on the adjuster,....use the lash chart pictured, to do multible cylinders, rather than chase each cylinder,....I usually repeat the cycle 2-3 times to confirm 100% my lash pattern and clearances,....depending on whos rockers your using check valve cover clearance, esp if factory covers? you may need to remove the baffles,...my last 440 build I ran 1.6 ratio Crane Golds under stock 70 covers, all the baffles had to go

Dayclona, I did remark the damper and put on timing tape. The damper was off 1 degree.

Thanks for the info.
