74 Road Runner 440 4spd Production Numbers? - 01/12/10 04:07 AM

My brother is going to buy a 1974 Road Runner with the original 440 and 4 speed. Black exterior with red stripes. White interior.

Does anyone know the production numbers for 440, 4 speed 1974 road runners?

I won't have pictures for a few days.

Original 4-speed? my understanding is all "u" coded Road Runner/GTXs in 73-74' were automatics.
One source shows 388 produced in 74 with the 440HP/Torqueflite.

Zero.

You could only get the 440 with the automatic trans in these cars in 73-74. You could however get a 400 in either an automatic or a 4 speed. If he buys it under the impression it's original, he's sadly mistaken. BTW, if it's an original 440 car, it will be a RoadRunner GTX. The GTX was a package available on the RoadRunner and the only way you could get a 440 in one.

Thanks for the information.

Production numbers don't matter if it's not the original drivetrain. I did not know that the 4 speed was not available with the 440. I doubt that this car is a GTX so the 440 is most likely a transplant also.

Link below provides production numbers

As with anything, there are exceptions. And 1974 Roadrunners with the 440 engine production numbers is very controversial (sp?)

If you can post the partial vin, and/or snap a pic of the fender tag.

FWIW alot of 400 - 4 sp cars (fifth vin digit "P")were converted to 440 power (as well as the small blocks)

The consensus is there was never a package or option titled "GTX" on any order forms or other documentation for model years 72-74'. Simply, if you ordered the optional 440 ci engine the model was called a Road Runner/GTX, and would have both name plates.

Yes that's what I've read over the years as well. Check the 440 box on the order sheet and the GTX "package" is automatic. But I agree, it's not like the gtx was a real package, just some extra name tags that came along when you ordered the 440.

All Roadrunner GTX's in 73 & 74 were auto's. The GTX "package" got you the 440 motor, trim upgrades, and a few other goodies. Here is a picture of my 74 which is currently for sale. The 74's are the rarest and the last year of the GTX package.

Beautiful 74', love the color and wheel choice. Again however, I have to disagree on the use of the term "GTX package". For 72', first year of this name change, order forms/documents contain no reference to a "package" or option called "GTX". Other than the three "GTX" badges there was no other trim, or trim package, associated with ordering the 440 engine option. For 72', some of the mechanical upgrades received when ordering the 440, like previous model years, included HD suspension/springs, torque boxes/shackle pivot box plates, k-frame skid plate and, in the case of a 4-speed, a Dana 60.

Note the wording used to describe the Satellite Brougham becoming the "Brougham package"

In my opinion the Chrysler rational is that the (73/74) cars with the 440 and GTX labeling were meant to be identified as the ultimate musclercar package (drivetrain wise) of the model year. A marketing issue. Since Plymouth had the 318 as standard, offered the 340/360 as optional, as well the smogger 400 which was below its potential in stock form, the 440 was top of the food chain.

OK, I'll ask....I see two pics...One has the GTX script above the engine call-out and one has the script below the engine call-out...Did they come either way ???

The picture of the white hood above, having the "GTX" badge below the call out does not look to be correct IMO. May be a "stick on" version, as the original badge used there was stud mounted requiring holes. On these cars I have always seen the badges, or the holes where the badges should go, above the call out.

OK thanks guys...Hey, I've talked to that guy before... ...He's the original owner...Bought the car when he was in the military and drove it back from texas...Cool car but too rusty for me... ...I actually spied that on on the road and my buddy was amazed I saw it from that distance...That was the trained mopar eye !!!

What's the story with that car? Looks like a 73. Black? Any details? My black car (above) is a 73 as well. Going to be restored some day?

Re: 74 Road Runner 440 4spd Production Numbers? - 01/15/10 08:42 PM

The owner was nice to talk to...Original 440 trans, 8 3/4 rear, still in there...Engine bay is original with the factory vapor separator still on there !!! White interior with power windows...The drivers door 4 way switch had a clear plastic cover over it...Did the factory have that ??? I'm guessing so...And now for the bad news...IT'S SHOT !!! quarters, inner extensions, trunk, ,frame, doors, fenders, floors, are all completely rusted and the torsion bar crossmember is rusted off and laying on the ground !! But it's a good teaser to look at...The guy wanted stupid money for it years ago...I was thinking about snagging it for the drivetrain when I was building mine but it just did'nt seem worth it...Now if I was a dishonest guy and wanted a GTX... ..But that is'nt me... ...Besides, mine has a factory sunroof...

Something about the BB that makes the cars. Probably the TORQUE! LOL!

Mine is a U code and had a blue interior. It was a complete car but everything was worn or shot. Non original motor. Took parts from 10 cars to put mine back together. Missing build sheet and tag. So the only pedigree docs I have is vin tag and door label. Who knows my build sheet might be in that one in the field! Black and white combo looks great. I've seen RAV440s car but I believe it was originally B5 and is being redone.

PS-Nice ride!

4 speed was not offered in a 74 Road Runner with a 440. 727 only in the 440 cars

Re: 74 Road Runner 440 4spd Production Numbers? - 09/19/15 05:06 AM

Something that hasn't been mentioned yet. In 73 the B bodies went to the rubber isolated K frame as well as the isolated perches on the diff. And all the springs had large front bushings to increase the smooth ride too.
Chrysler was smart enough to equip the 440 4 speeds with a Dana 60 from 67-72 so they wouldn't have warranty claims from guys dumping the clutch. And they had smaller front spring bushings to lessen the isolation.
No Dana's after 72 therefore no 440 4 speeds.
And even if they had offered a 4 speed, would they have done the whole rubber isolated deal on a Dana? Nope
