I changed the intake on my mid 80's 318 and started loosing water out the exhaust. What's wrong? I know the intake is good. Maybe just the intake gasket? Thanks

If you're loosing coolant commonly the end (front & rear) supplied gaskets are too thick which holds the intake up just enough for one of the front water ports at the head/intake junction to leak. R&R the intake w a new set of side gaskets (& if using metal side gaskets be sure & use sealant on the metal gaskets) but use a thick swath of silicone at the front/rear instead of the supplied gaskets. Clean the mating surfaces there good w brake clean or similar so the silicone will stay in place forever & you're good. I'm assuming that this is not an eng that has been sitting for awhile and is dripping condensation out the tailpipe and I have seen them gushing enough you'd think it'd have to be a coolant leak, sorry just checking.

Make sure you are loosing coolant from the radiator before assuming that's where the water is coming from.

lets get some infor- what makes the poster think hes losing water out his exhaust. arfe you sure its not condensation blowing out the tailpipe?

You sure its not fuel. If the timing/carb idle isn't set right gas will be dripping out of the tail pipe.

It's water. We were at a new years race saturday first pass put water out all the way down the eighth mile. Also now getting some in the crankcase. Drove to the track made 8 passes drove home total of around 100 mile lost almost a gallon of water.

No bubbles in the water. Didn't have time to check any of the plugs.

Condensation is a real thing and a natural thing with an internal combustion engine. will show up worse in cool, cold or very humid weather. But no matter where you are it does occur. Here the last few days it has been so bad that the streets get icy in the exhaust path of cars at stop lights. The water just runs out. I have a half inch ice coating on the quarter panel of he truck right now from condensation. Sure it is much colder here but condensation happens all over and it show up worse in some places or at different weather conditions but it one form or another it is always there.

I'd say a gallon of water would be unmistakable when you drain the oil. It should come out all muddy and nasty. I worked on a 4cyl van that had a hairline crack in a cylinder. When the engine would heat up water would pour right into the cylinder. The engine would cool and suddenly hold its water just fine. I checked the dipstick and it looked like I dipped it in water. (actually I did) When I drained the oil it looked like a storm drain. That was CRAZY!
