What size Carb???

What size Carb??? - 01/05/10 11:02 PM

I'm wondering what size carburetor to use on a 495 CI stroker? I used the 440 Source kit. Stealth heads, I had the 10 degree locks installed. A Comp Cam xtreme energy high lift .545 cam with duration at .050" of 241 on the intake and 247 on the exhaust. Indy dual plane intake. I'm planing on using TTI exhaust but unsure whether to use the 1 7/8" or 2". Suggestions on the Carburetor; type and size, and the header size will be greatly appreciated.

850DP or maybe something like a quick fuel 950. I have a quick fuel carb and am very pleased with it

I have 10 to 1 compression, Four speed, and a Dana with 3.54 gears. I was planing on 295 50 15's for driving and I have 275 60 15 BFG Drag radial's to mess around with.

Using the Summit equation I came up with 870 CFM.

For mainly street use / occasional track...Try a quick fuel 950, I really believe you will be happy. As far as headers 1"7/8 would be fine (minimum)being they are TTI's; Use 3" exhaust minimum

Holley has a carb selector on their website.

For those cubes, i would go with an 1000HP series or maybe a Demon 850 & 2" primary headers, let that monster breath.

I have a Holley 870 Street Avenger with vacuum secondaries that I had planed on using. After reading the forms it looks like with the 4 speed a double pumper is the way to go.

what cam's are you guy's using to break into the 11's. In your opinion what kind of Hp and times should I expect?

Re: What size Carb??? - 01/06/10 05:01 AM

I run a racer Brown 242 @ 50 and 510 lift.

My buddy runs the identical comp that you have, and runs about 1 tenth faster in car that's 100 pounds lighter. 9.6:1 440 with eddy heads.

Import to realize that a good base engine. (cubes, heads, cam, etc) will only get you part way there. tune(timning, carb mix, and setting) gear, tire, etc.. is just as much part of getting it there.

Re: What size Carb??? - 01/06/10 10:49 AM

i use a 825 mighty demon on my 440(10.78:1)
it has run as quick as 11.35@119
this is with a purple 509 hydraulic cam, prepped stealth heads, 1 7/8 hooker comp headers into a 3" system with aero chambers
with your extra cubes i'd go hp950,850 mighty demon or step up a little to a hp1050
i am thinking of getting a Prosystems 1050 later this year reasonable price for a custom carb
have fun

A 850 Mighty Demon probably flows 950cfm. You are going to need at least 950 for that engine.

I run a manual six pack that flows about that much and it is just about right for my "small" 440 that only runs high 11s in a 3950lb car.

See what your manifold vacuum is when you pick a carb. Any more than 2 inches of vac at WOT and the carb is probably too small for drag racing.

Dougs Headers are 2" primary and 3.5" collector. They are more like the size you need.

For the money a Pro Form 950HP would be a very good choice. Mine has been VG and just as fast as a 950HP Holley. Jim

Nice combo. I think that monster would like an
Double pumper 850-870, (maybe a flowed version to
950 cfm, IF IT'S ROWED UPSTAIRS QUITE OFTEN), 2"
primary headers (36-38" length), 12" collector
length, necked to a 3" exhaust. (I would include
a crossover in the system, if running a closed
exhaust system on street/strip. More power!)

The Doug's Header's look good from the posts I've read. I had never looked at them before. TTI's have gotten so out of line with their pricing. A few years ago my dad put them on his 440, he thought he had paid around $650-$700. Now they are $871.

I'm running a 416 stroker. I've tried a lot of carbs over the years. But my Quick Fuel 950 gives it just what it needs. My vote the 950.

He needs a carb that will truely flow 950-1000 cfm, a 950hp won't do it, all it is is a opened up 750dp, might work great on a stroked SB, but a stroked BB pushing 500 cubes needs decent CFM, not knocking the 950hp, its a great carb, but not for a combo like that if your after full potential. Thats why i recammemded either the 1000hp or 850 mighty demon, the 1000hp is a spiffied up 850dp, both these carbs flow well into the 900 cfm range. I had a fairly mild 446 with iron heads, it screamed with a set of 2" hooker headers & an 850dp, he has way more then that, plus its a stick car.

Thanks for all of the advise. I went with a Holley 0-9380.
