Dealer Installed Sun Roofs

Dealer Installed Sun Roofs - 03/04/07 12:46 AM

Did Chrysler consign specific Sun Roof companies when customers had sun roofs installed at the dealer?

Or did each dealer deal with whatever aftermarket vendor was in their area?

Just one vendor, ASC, they had stores in the major cities to install them. I drove new cars to Dallas to have them put in back in the 70s. It was strange watching those guys cut big holes in new cars. web page

There was a member there that had a 70 340 Cuda with a sunroof. Looked just like a factory unit. IIRC, it was in the family since 71-72?. He thought for sure it was factory. But found the original owner it was installed.

The big 3 sent their cars out, fresh off the factory line to ASC when the customer ordered it. If the customer wanted one off the lot to have one, the dealers drove/trailered them to a local ASC installer. They were all the same parts. The factory warranty work went to ASC when needed. What I was told back then was, the tinted glass one was a sunroof and the one without glass was the moonroof.

Good point Earlybee.
I was thinking not of the power sun roofs, but the "pop up" roofs, or moonroofs , I would call them.
Would the dealer take the cars to ASC do all of those as well?

ASC also built convertable camaros and firebirds when the factory quit making them.

ASC did all kinds, manual or power, of sunroofs/moonroofs, accordion/slideback, popups, t/tops, around here when they were new cars. If a new car dealer used somebody else to install he was on his own and the factory would not warranty them. Car owners could use anyone else after they bought the car and warranty repairs was in their lap. ASC was in the big 3s back pocket back then.

Is Remove-A-Top Sunroofs a product of ASC ?

From what I can see they are aftermarket.

can someone post detailed pictures (top open, top closed, interior trim out, electric switch if so equipped, conversion, etc) of the original style asc sun roof for an e-body?

Gents, the ASC roofs installed before delivery are a different situation than "dealer installed". ASC did have a few installation centers, but certainly did not do anywhere near all the "dealer installed" sunroofs. If the car was pre-sold with a sunroof, it would ship (usually from a distribution center, not the assembly plant) to the closest install location and get completed.

There are quite a few independent ASC dealers that did installs, but there were also several competitive brands that had installers around the country, and the dealers could use anyone they want for roofs that were not the factory option. It was not mandatory that the dealer sell an ASC product if they wanted to add a sunroof.

Re: Dealer Installed Sun Roofs - 03/05/07 06:34 PM

I think that's where I was trying to get at Robar.
Sunroofs at the dealer were installed with an aftermarket piece from a company that they either had a relationship with, or bought and installed.

Thanks for the link Earlybee, I saw that link as well, and asked for some info.

Yes, but actually very, very, few dealers ever took on installing their own sunroofs. I know very well, I tried to set up programs for them to do it at one point in my career.

ASC, Webasto, Hollandia and others set up and trained installers to take care of the dealers needs.

Re: Dealer Installed Sun Roofs - 03/07/07 03:48 PM

So it's more likely an aftermarket sunroof ( moonroof really), got installed by an aftermarket sunroof co. then at the dealership, correct?

Wonder if they keep records back 30 years...
