How to remove rust from inside hood front lip?

How to remove rust from inside hood front lip? - 01/02/10 05:57 PM

Was at my yard yesterday checking on some parts I would need for my 1972 Charger rally and popped the hood to hear that gravel in a coffee can sound that is soo common with these cars. THough the rust didn't fall out, I can still hear it when I shake the hood around. I want to take care of the problem when I pull the hood to swap engines in the next month and figure that would be a good time to do it. I don't want to dip the hood as the paint is still nice and I don't want to reseal the jams at this time. Can someone recoment something that will kill the rust and seal it, since I can't see it it covering there. Suggestions?

Ospho avaiable at Ace hardware sprayed with a windex type sprayer bottle. It's phosphoric acid which neutralizes rust. Be careful qabout getting it on paint that shows.

ok, but how do I reseal it? The lip on these things can't be reached because they a somewhat sealer. I could remove the rust, but the sureface would be exsposed again to the same problem to happen down the line.

First be sure it's rust and not just the lumps of dry calking rattling around. Opinions will vary on rust repair but I would only consider one of two ways;

A. drill the welds, split it open, cut out and replace any rust, seal it with a good etching primer/sealer, weld it back together.

B. Sent it out to have it dipped, replace any missing areas when it comes back, seal as above.

C. Find a rust free hood (might be the best option)

Get something to break away the large loose scale and then just brush, pour, spray POR-15 however you can get it in there.

The hood is clean, just some heavy scaling that is falling out of it. Dosen't need rust repair yet, so I'm trying to fix and future problems.

As above scott, the hood isn't needing repair, just trying to stop it from getting worse.

find a nice 1972 charger power bulge hood is vertually impossible. I have had 7 bulge hoods in 20 years. My last one went on Kenny Waynes charger and that only because the one on the Rallye charger I got was that clean.

I do appreciate you answering my questions there scott.

I might see if I can get some large seringes or turkey basters in those crevices, then maybe see if the por15, rust bullet will work in there. Hate to ruin the nice paint that could be buffed out.

No problem Migs,

In that case I'd probably send it out to get dipped/stripped and E-coated.

One thing's for certain, I wouldn't get POR15 within 100 feet of any car I was working on!

mask it off,so you don't ruin the paint and try to stay away from por-15.If you end up using ospho and rust bullet,paint,e.t.c, spray 3M Rust Fighter

I'll second that!

Take if from someone who's been there and done that.

I'm still amazed at the people on here that use POR-15 despite members repeatedly telling them how much crap it is!

i had good results with por-15. i only used it on areas that were rusty that see lots of moisture. my car was parked outside for 3 canadian winters before i built a garage and it's held up great. if you don't want to dip the hood one of the rust sealer type paints would be a good non intrusive solution to stop rust under the hood.

if it was mine, I'd fab up a long "valve cover" tray out of sheet metal, seal it with silicone or something, take the hood off and set it lip first into then tray, filled with Rust desolver from either Eastwood, or the farm store. the safe okay for your hands stuff. Let it soak for a week at most.

Pull it out, keep it front lip down and go to the "underside" of it and clean the insides with some prep-all or wax removed in a can, rinse out with a water hose, and air dry it with compressed air. THEN..finally.., take some rust zero, rust bullet, Rust encapsulator by Eastwood whatever you prefer and pour little bits into the openings, move hood around to cover well. I'd also spray some rust encapsulator from a can in there to cover and other areas the pouring didn't help

Thats just what I'd do though.

make the "valve cover" soaking tub from a section of cheap rain gutter from the hardware store.

Just curious, what's the problems associated with por-15? I've never used it, but have used rust bullet.

The biggest issue is that regardless of how well you follow the instructions (with prep, etc.) it delaminates, bubbles, and peels off.

So, sealing my gas tank patch with it was a bad idea???

It's not, it's wonderful stuff, really, everyone should use it.

I've used por-15 with no issues. For sure, only use it on bare steel, not over top other paint.

Yes, that stuff will work (it's basically the same product as Evaporust), but you still need to rinse it with water which invites new rust so it would have to be sealed and rinsed immediately with another product (like Ospho) then sealed with a good self etching primer sealer. You don't need to top it off with anything else, these parts lasted 40 years with a crappy factory primer/paint coat, they'll last allot longer with a quality sealer/paint coat, especially with the pampered care most classic cars recieve.

Used it on bare steel.

Same problems as Scott Smith.

Lifts, rusts underneath, bubbles.....

....and that's after less than a year on suspension parts that weren't even bolted on the car yet!

C'mon guys, its crap and if you don't know it you haven't used it for very long.
