converter question - 12/21/09 10:45 PM

can i use the convert that i had on my 383 behind the 440 i just pulled? its a cast crank 440 out of a motor home. and the 383 is in the road runner, i believe its a factory converter. both engines have a stock cam intake and carb. just looking to make it go down the road.

also, dose anyone know where i could find specs on a motor home engine? like compression cam specs and the output? i think its a 75, it has electronic ignition, and a carter carb on it. dont know much else about it.

i dont want to steer you wrong, but i'm pretty sure your 383 is internally balanced, so there would be no balance weights welded on that converter. your cast crank 440 is externally balanced.it's converter had weights on it.i know b & m has a flexplate(offset balance) to use your neutral balanced converter. hope someone chimes in to confirm.

The TC will work by adding two weights onto it.

OK. Here we go.

1. MH 440's had steel crank up to MID 1973.
Late 73 and up had the cast crank
That MID is important. So 73's could have steel or forged cranks.

2. The block: Absolutely NO difference despite all the urban myths out there.

3. Steel crank motors usually had the 6 pak rods. But it's not guaranteed. But don't worry about this. You do have the cast crank.

4. The MH heads had extra cooling passages around the spark plug. They're 88 cc so they're fine for rebuilds. The low comression came from dished pistons.

5. The only spark plug you can use that will seat properly is the R42TS

6. The valves are 4 groove vs. 2 groove.

There is absolutely nothing different otherwise between the MH/truck/industrial blengine and pass. car engine. Don't listen to any urban myths.

7. The 727 is a HD 727 (think taxi/cop car) with a short tailshaft. Some with and some without the e-brake at the end of the tailshaft. Regardless, swap the tailshaft and you have a HD727.

8. For a pass. car you have to replace the oil pan and the pickup.

9. You may have to change the water pump housing to get the correct inlet & outlet locations.

10. Your cast crank will not be machined to accept a 4 speed manual transmission.

11. Weights will have to be added to your 383 steel crank torque converter to use with the 440 cast crank.

Good luck.

Going by that, wouldn't the weights need to be added..not removed?
