Fixing oil leak once and for all (I hope)

About 5 years ago, I helped a pal rebuild a 440. Now, we've got it torn apart to fix a couple of oil leaks. Help us get it right this time, please!

First, it looks as though oil crept up the threads on a couple of timing cover bolts that thread into the crankcase. What is the best product to seal the threads on bolts that also seal liquid from escape?

The oil pan gaskets are leaking at the timing cover. I thought we'd try Cometic gaskets this time, even though they're made-to-order and we'll have to wait a week. I've never tried them and have heard good things. Any opinions?

Finally, there's the rear seal, which is also leaking. AndyF covered this in his new book, so I'm thinking we'll just take his adivce and try the Mancini billet retainer with an orange Fel-Pro seal.

Hopefully, we can seal this sucker up tight. Right now, it looks like something that Captain Hazlewood put together. Extra credit for the first person who gets THAT old reference!

Try this link for the rear seal install. As for the pan bolts I'd use a skim coat of silicone or pipe thread sealant on the threads.

I used a victor "tuff seal" pan gasket on my 440.. Its a sandwiched piece of metal so it will not squish out when tightening the bolts.. I used some sealant that never gets hard and is gooey on it.. Permatex "hyper" ?? Its blue....

The Exxon Valdez spill continues to resonate in the world's consciousness, but the ship itself and its notorious captain have fallen back into obscurity. As for Captain Hazelwood, he stood trial on several criminal counts. He admitted drinking before boarding the ship but argued he was not drunk, and an Alaska jury agreed. The captain's only conviction in the case was for negligently discharging oil. He was fined $50,000 and this summer will begin performing 1,000 hours of community service, picking up litter along Alaska highways. After his trial Captain Hazelwood became a teacher at a maritime academy. Recently, he's been working as a consultant for a law firm in New York.

Make sure that your "rear main" leak is NOT the oil pressure sending unit. I have seen that more than once...........
