66-67 plymouth , 275/60/15 on 8 in rim,what backspace? - 12/13/09 04:41 PM

Any members running a 275/60/15 tire on an 8 inch rim, with stock rear wheel lip and springs,on a 66 or 67 PLYMOUTH B body ?
I need to know what offset will work as I want to order a set of steel wheels for my 1966 satellite.I know it is a very tight fit but I think you can run a 275/60.I am running 255's now and I need a taller wider tire.On a previous plymouth I fitted 275's on a 7 inch rim but the rim is not wide enough, thanks !

4.5" backspace. It's a tight fit.

I have 245-15-60 on 15X8 wheels with a 5 1/4" BS.. I think a 5" bs would have been better.. Mine rubs a little on the inside fndr well on one side... 67 Dodge coronet....

On my 66 Coronet a 5" backspace puts a 15x8 wheel right in the center of the useable area.

Re: 66-67 plymouth , 275/60/15 on 8 in rim,what backsp - 12/14/09 01:19 AM

Here's pics of my 66 Coronet with 18x8" rims and 5.5" backspace. Tires are 255/45/18"

The rub mark in pic's 2 and 3 are from what was on the car when I bought it, not from the new tires/wheels.

Im pretty sure 4 1/2 is not enough backspace, and Im not confident that using dodge fitment with my plymouth is a good idea but I appreciate all the input.Hopefully someone will chime in who has these tires on a plymouth !!

Re: 66-67 plymouth , 275/60/15 on 8 in rim,what backspace? - 12/14/09 02:12 AM

I believe the backspacing will be somewhere between 3 1/2" - 4".

That is an awful big tire to try to get into that wheel well. It may not fit!

I run a 245/60-15 on a 15x7 rim, 4-1/4" bs. The tire is perfectly squared up in the well with this setup. My lips are full intact, with chrome trim, no trimming at all. I have lots of room (about 3/4" on each side of the tire), and wish I would have gone to 255/60's, But 275's are going to be on the tight side. They will likely fit when the car is sitting, but driving around, I think they're gonna rub all the time. I could be wrong, I know guys run 275's in these cars, but with the llps cut, and a tall stance. If you're sitting at a stock stance, the lip isn't the tight spot. Its up in the well about 3" where the body contour steps in thats the pinch spot.

Re: 66-67 plymouth , 275/60/15 on 8 in rim,what backspace? - 12/14/09 02:41 PM

I'm thinking that if the BS on a 15 x 7 is 4 1/4" then on a 15 x 8 it needs to be 3 3/4". And that's what I've measured before.

67 satellite. Have G60-15 that need to get installed. I measured for 15 x 8 rims but thinking I might go to 15 x 7 just to be safe.

Let us know how it turns out.

You're going the wrong way with the backspace math. You're thinking correctly, though... If a 15x7 with 4-1/4" bs gets you centered, then a 15x8 will want 4-3/4". when you measure a rim, remember we're measuring to the tire bead, not the outside edge of the rim.

Just checked out your post re: your motor. I have a lot of experience with my 2-bbl / 270 horse 383. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to PM me.

Re: 66-67 plymouth , 275/60/15 on 8 in rim,what backspace? - 12/14/09 05:53 PM

On my 67 belvedere I used an 8" wheel with 5" back space and had rubbing. I used a 1/4" spacer and have no rubbing now. So for my car 4 3/4" back space would be perfect. This is with a 275 60 15 M/T drag radial.

Jamey,
is your wheel lip intact, not cut or folded in? where are you rubbing,on the lip,or up top in the wheel tub? thanks for posting

Yep went the wrong way on the back spacing. I agree it looks like 4 3/4" should be perfect.

I want to say the plymouth rear wheel houses must be different than the dodges... I do not think a 4 3/4 bs would have worked on my 67 coronet with 8" wheels....

15x8, 4.5 backspace, 28x9x15 slick. Obviously I'm missing some of the wheel lip, but these otherwise fit fine.

15x8 with 4.25 backspace, 275/60x15 tire. Also fit okay. If I did have a wheel lip, I wouldn't have hesitated to roll it for this fit.

I use 15x8 4.5 backspace and had to trim wheel lip, I think 4.75 would be better

well, looks like Id better order the wheels with 4 3/4 BS.Hey belvedere67,how about posting a full size picture of your car? it looks pretty sweet in your sig pic,im pretty tempted to buy a set of centerlines myself, they've always been my favorite aftermarket rim.

I know this is an old thread but at one time, was there an offset spring hanger kit for these cars? (66 belvedere)

If not, could we make an Abody one work?

Spring interference isn't the issue. Wheel well size is. In stock configuration the springs already sit inboard of the wheel well's inner wall.

Plus I might be wrong but with offset hangers on left side of the car won't it hit the gas tank filler tube

"Plus I might be wrong but with offset hangers on left side of the car won't it hit the gas tank filler tube"

My 67 Belvedere is off set 5/8 to the frame front hanger and off set shackle in the rear and it clears nicely.

Thanks wasn't sure if it would clear
