A990 grill

A990 grill - 01/29/07 12:22 PM

I've been trying to make an A990 grille from some spares that I have for my '65 Coronet. After looking at some old photos, it is pretty clear where to make the headlight door and original grill cuts. It is evident that the "added" section of grille goes behind the shortened original grille and the shortened headlight doors. It is also plain that the new section has to be bent a bit in order to fit. My question is how did they originally attach it to the other two sections? It has been suggested that they were only pop-rivetted. Doesn't sound quite right to me though. Does anybody have details on how to do this grille?

I sold my A990 so I cant look at it anymore, but the grill was just pop riveted together. I think there is a place that advertises in Mopar Collector Guide that repops some of the hood trim for the 65 cars. They may do some of the grill work for the A990 cars. I know a guy who has an original car. If you can't find any info, I can PM you his number. He has redone some grills in the past for himself.

I have some close up pics, not on computer, of what was suppose to be an original I took at the Mopar Nats a few years ago, I used that info to do mine, see attachment. The 1st one I made is on this car, I used less than perfect parts on this one, I saved the best pieces for my next one. If you'd like, I could scan and show them later.

All the ones I have seem were pop riveted.

They were pop riveted. I have built them before. When you install the headlamp replacement section it is to tall so when it is viewed from the side it will protrude forward beyond the original grille. Remember these were race cars and even production fit was poor at best.

I would sure appreciate the scan. I am not quite sure where to put the rivets or how big a section to use from a donor grille. I am not trying to recreate an a990 sedan. I just really like the looks of the grille and think that it would look good on my hardtop.

If in doubt, call Jim Kramer at Kramer's Automotive in Butler, PA. He advertises in all the Mopar pubs and Hemmings if you need his phone number.

Not to bust stones, but A990 refers to the engine; the cars themselves were WO51 (Dodge) and RO51 (Plymouth). That might come in handy when you're discussing these cars with the guys who own them.

John, Sorry I didn't get these on here sooner, pics were not digital, not sure how detailed they'll be. I did mine just like this, super nice car, suppose to be an original.
