Grand Cherokee to 72 RR Rear Disc Brake Swap Possible?

Grand Cherokee to 72 RR Rear Disc Brake Swap Possible? - 12/26/06 12:42 AM

Has anyone tried or is it even possible to swap the rear disc brakes from a 94 or newer Grand Cherokee or Durango to the 8 3/4 rear in my 72 RR. What is involved in the swap, will it work and will I have any problems eliminating the electronics for the rear discs?

I am planning on doing a 11.75 front disc swap and keeping my power setup.

Any help would be appreciated!

yea, it'll work but you have to watch the outside dia. for wheel size.

What is the diameter of the Cherokee rear discs? I plan on running 15 X 8" Keystone Classics, will 15" wheels be big enough or will I have to go larger?

most have 16" wheels, for brake clearance.
look around some jeeps have 15's then order them for that year.

About three months ago, I swapped '95 Grand Cherokee rear discs onto my Dart's 8 1/4.
It was a fairly straight forward conversion with little trouble.
You will need to take a Dremel and remove a few thousandths from the inside diameter of the caliper mounting bracket in order to get it to fit over your axle housing. It took me about five minutes per side.
You'll need longer bolts to mount the bracket to the axle housing.
The one drawback is that you won't be able to utilize the internal parking brake.
The spacing of the axle flange puts the rotor too close to the backing plate.
I drilled out the rivets and removed the backing plate.
However, if the parking brake is a big deal, you might want to consider a 1/4" spacer on the face of the axle flange.
A 1/8" spacer might do the trick.

Thanks guys for all the help, now I just need it to warm up a little and stop raining so I can hit the junkyard to round up the parts. I plan on having the housing and all the rear brake and some other parts powder coated in January.

Thanks,
Joe

Anyone have any pictures of this type of swap?

I would like to see...

I planned on ditching my power booster & old style master cylinder for the new style manual master cylinder.

Would this setup (new style manual master cylinder with front & rear disc) work with the cherokee rear disc conversion & stock power disc calipers up front?

Is there a problem with pulling the entire rearend and cutting the housing down? Are they not strong enough, no aftermarket axcles, etc???

just thinking out loud...
