the stamp read... T440E
1025

Is that a 63 or a 68? Anything else I can know from this info?

I believe the "T" could mean two things:
Truck or Trenton (assembly plant)
and the "E" is the year code = 1969

("T" is also a year code = 1963, just FYI...440's
werent available yet in 1963)

Well the guy I got the car from said he got it out of a truck. so that may be right.

E after the number usually means cast crank. There should be a number in front of the T so look at the pad again. You can also look at the VIN stamp on the side of the block as well as the casting number and date on the side of the block.

Thats what I thought too. Check the damper. If it's a thick beast with a weight at the front, then E is definately for a cast crank. According to my 73 parts catalog the letter in front of the displacement is for the series or year. This may have changed on newer engines.

Year of block really does not mean anything. The only reason those counter guys ask is because of how their catalogs are set up. They have to start with a year. Unless you are buying stuff that would make a differance if it is a cast crank or not. Then you should not be buying from the corner parts store any ways.

A '69 cast crank doesn't make a ton of sense either. The cast cranks didn't come out until the '70s and trucks got forged cranks even after the cast cranks were installed in cars.

I would guess that T = truck, and E = 1969 make the most sense. The date the block was made should be cast into the block itself on the passenger side toward the rear right above the block's model number. And the damper is probably the best way to know for sure without opening it up if it is a forged or cast crank because someone could have swapped it out at some point in the last 40 years.

Ok, I dragged out the 69 parts catalog. It gives an example for 1968. According to this document, all engines are ID'd as follows:

First 2 digits is plant code (PM=Mound Road, PT=Trenton)

Next 3 digits is displacement

Next 4 digits are the date code (Jan 1, 69=2714-Oct 31, 69=3017)

Followed by a 4 digit serial number beginning at 0001 for each days production.

There, more information than any one wants to know.

1969 440 assembled at the Trenton plant
T- Trenton plant
440- CI.
E- 1969

There is no "truck" designation.
If it was a cast crank motor the stamping number would start with 4T through 8T (1974-1978) or have the designation G,H,or J, for 1971-1973. Cast cranks were introduced in 1971.

The block casting number on the side should be 2536430 (1966-1972)

Incorrect , the E would be BEFORE the 440 if that were a 69 model year engine. As AndyF said the OP needs to look at the pad again and tell us what number is BEFORE the T as you noted how the stamping change beginning wit hthe 74 model year , the E after the 440 denotes a CAST CRANK .

As far as cast cranks in 440's , not till sometime in 73. I have a virgin 73 440 , NON HP , it's got a forged crank . The first big block to get a cast crank was the 383-2bbl motor in 1971 .
