New Compressor Locked up

New Compressor Locked up - 07/14/08 12:44 AM

We installed a new compressor in my 81 Imperial and everything worked fine for a couple of days - but then today the AC wasn't blowing cold and the engine stopped. Some green fluid is coming out of the top of the compressor; not a lot, just a little. Shut the AC off and the car ran fine. Any ideas? Did I get a bad compressor? I bought a new one, not a remanufactured. Thanks.

Did you add oil? Was it in the compressor? Was this a conversion?

The green fluid sounds like the die added for leak detection

My Duster called for 2 lbs 12 oz of R12

When you convert to 134A it takes less but you put about 18oz?

Did the previous comp. seize-up too? Metal can be pumped thru system. Did you raplace rec/drier? Did you add proper amount of oil to system? Modern a/c comp. do not have a "crankcase" and the only lube they get is oil in the freon.

Thanks guys. I'm directing these questions to my friend who help me install new compressor, clutch, and dryer. And yes it was converted.

The compressor came dry and required oil. I put about 6 oz in the compressor and changed the dryer. I felt like if it needed more oil I could add a can of oil charge. I have never done a converstion but this one had been done some years back. Several people said use the green oil (can't remember the exact name) instead of PAG. Not sure that was a good idea but the experts said that would help with any misture or residual oil in the system. I could never get the system below 25 on the low side and it frankly wouldn't take any additional Freon. I was getting 47 degrees on the interior vents so I figured we were going the right way. Not sure what happened to cause the compressor to lock up except maybe it didn't like the oil.

The compressor was brand new so I am sure we can get it replaced...

Well based on the old thread some of the questions we asked were never anwsered. Did you flush the system out? What comprossor make and model? Did you replaced the drier?
Sounds like an oil related problem if the compressor tag said use PAG and you used another oil without a proper system flush.
