muffler poll - 07/13/08 09:43 PM

Getting my 3 inch TTI system in about a month or so. I need to pick some mufflers. Flowmaster 40s sound good, but they have the tinny sound and everyone has them. Heard Spintechs have a good sound, but a little loud and glasspack-like at high RPM. Magnaflows seem to have a good sound too, but I am just looking for a very aggressive and different sound. What do you think?

What car is this for?

69 Cuda 340. All stock for the time being, but it's getting a lot more attention in the next year from the sale of my 71 Barracuda in a couple of weeks. I know 3" is overkill for the moment, but it will give me room to grow into it and I am sold on the sound of 3".

I prefer the Dynomax Super Turbo that TTI sells with the kit.

I use the Ultra Flows also.

Re: muffler poll - 07/13/08 11:16 PM

You neglected Goerlich's XLERATOR. They make one that is 18" and will fit right on A-bodies (we run them) and they outflow the Magnaflow and are significantly quieter than any Flowmaster. They are one of the only 18" body sized muffler, like the stock Cuda ones are so they are easy to fit on. Like MagnaFlow, their 18" one can be bought in offset center, 3" in and out. The Goerlich number is X119. They flow about 97-98% of an open pipe so they are great for power and they are about 8 to 10 dBA quieter than louder, chambered mufflers at 3500 rpm on a big engine (474 cu in.) engine.

Out of those Spintechs. But I would go with Dynomax Ultra Flos. Thats what I have on my Duster with a 340 and they sound good.

Re: muffler poll - 07/14/08 03:17 AM

I am very happy with the magnaflow's I have behind my 390.... No drone and has a beefy idle. It does get loud at full throttle TBF

Re: muffler poll - 07/14/08 03:20 AM

I guess i should mention hooker 1 3/4 headers with 3" pipe to 3" muffs... FWIW the dynomax super turbos I bought had a 3" inlet/outlet but necked down to about 2 1/4 on the inside of the muff... I was not too happy to see that... I sent-em back and got the magnaflow's TBF

If you decide to go with a packed straight-through design then go with the Dynomax Ultra-Flo instead of the Magnaflow for the simple fact they tend to be much less. I run two 3" Ultra-Flos on my B block and only paid $80 each for them (the fully welded non S/S type). I love the Magnaflow too, don't get me wrong, but the Dynomax's are cheaper.

I see from your profile that you are in your 20s... same here, and I would be willing to bet your won't think the Dynomaxs are loud enough.

Re: muffler poll - 07/14/08 10:21 PM

What I'm looking for is the nasty raspy sound...without the crack of a glasspack. The magnaflow seems to have that from the sound of youtube vids, but i cant find any good ultraflo videos.

4100 pounds with a 3.31 gear running 11.50s at 115 through 3" XLERATORS on pump gas with a Gr. Gas X pipe. Measures around 93 dBAs at 10 feet at 3500 rpm.

Thats exactly what I like about tha magnaflows on my 440 cuda. At idle or cruise is just a good deep rumble, tame yet muscular. Step on it and the thing really barks! Very raspy (in a good way) compared to the dynomaxes on my previous 440 cuda.
And they are glasspacks--you can look right through them! Never been a fan of chambered muffs, makes no sense to slam your exhaust against a solid wall and make it change direction.

Re: muffler poll - 07/15/08 03:08 AM

If actual flow is not an issue then the flowmasters are for you. The spintechs sound excellent and not glass pack at all from all the ones I have heard. The magnaflows are probably the best bet from what it sounds you are looking for.

I bought the spintech pro-streets and love them. They are loud but such a great sound. My favorite clip is the Lingenfelter GTO on youtube.com

I agree I have the same xclerator mufflers on my 68 Dart. Sound great and get many compliments from the sound of them.

Re: muffler poll - 07/17/08 05:36 AM

i started using the thrush welded mufflers on a couple of my cars. they are not quite as loud as flowmasters, yet have that sweet "canny" sound at idle. they also don't seem to have near as much resonance in the car as flows. and at $38.00 each at the local chain auto parts store, ya can't beat 'em.
