exploded 8 1/4 SureGrip view? - 11/01/09 01:54 AM

Anyone here have an exploded view of an 8 1/4 SureGrip? I saw the 8 3/4 in the tech archives so no luck there.

I picked up an 8 1/4 SG and I had a lot of rust to clean out of it. Spiders have some pitting and I'm curious if there are supposed to be thrust plates behind the 2 larger ones?

Any help is appreciated.

I'm not real taught on this stuff but I'm guessing Clutch, break the carrier in half and I have the 4 spiders, 2 plates on the faces of the bigger gears and the 5 springs between the plates.

Seems Moparts isn't the place for 8 1/4's

I can't really help you with yours, but it must be a clutch type because the cone types only have 2 spiders.

It's pretty unlikely that someone had it apart already, and would put plates on 2 of the spiders and not the others, but who knows I guess.

Edit: you say it has 5 spings in between? That sounds like a cone to me. It's been awhile since I had one apart, but I remember the spiders gears having thin cupped washers behind them. But the cones and side gears meshed together with no extra parts.

70 Coronet, thanks but that is an open exploded view.

I talked to a former board member, he said there should ne any washers behind the large spiders because the preload wouldn't allow them to set right, the small ones have them though. I guess I'm fine.

You have the cone type sure grip. They wear out over time. Unless your real tight on money I would spring for the clutch type. The original cone type sure grips are just marginally good when new.

Here is one on ebay but I think they are for the 2.45 ratio only but not 100% positive because the part number is not a Mopar one from what I can tell. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayIS...AAQ:MOTORS:1123

those 2.45 carriers only worked for that gear ratio as I recall

the carrier I pulled from the housing was a 2.71, open ofcourse, and the 3.55 gear I have won't even fit on it(I was just testing it. I've got another open carrier it would fit, and the SG I have it fits fine and also in the housing. okay.

Part number on the snout next to where the bearing would be is 18-05-039-903 which seems to be the same number I'm finding on ebay like that one posted (except they had another "0" in the number (18-005-039-903) maybe a typo, and identical to some others on ebay claimed to be at the latest, early 1980's.

And on another note, i set 2 of my open carriers up side by side with the SG unit and the ring flange on all 3 are different heights. the SG being about 1/4" difference from the one that came of of the housing I'm using.

Hmm..

Post a pic of them side by side. Should only be two sizes IIRC. When you get into the 4.10 ratios and above the pin will need to be a notched one to get it past the ring gear.

Re: exploded 8 1/4 SureGrip view? - 11/02/09 02:30 AM

Here are all 3 that I have. all are sitting flat on the bearing snouts, not at all on the bearings.

Between the SG unit and the open 2.71 unit that came in the housing I am using, there is 7/16" difference exactly.

Between the 2.71 open and the later model unit I have, there is 1/16" difference.

When I got the later model, it had the 3.55 gear you see on the SG on it, i bought it from a dealer tech who said he had it in the rear of his 73 Dart. I know for sure that 3.55 will not fit on that 2.71 open carrier because I tried to test fit it..no dice. picture attached

Re: exploded 8 1/4 SureGrip view? - 11/02/09 02:33 AM

the 3.55 is a bit thicker than the 2.71 so I'm wondering if the difference is offset with that in mind. But I hear of people getting a 2.45 SG carrier and having to use a spacer..which seems, backwards to me judging by what I have here, and the fact gears are thicker as they get numerically higher

Re: exploded 8 1/4 SureGrip view? - 11/02/09 02:37 AM

I may be wrong but it appears that the sure grip carrier you have is the 2.45 ratio one. Someone correct me if i`m wrong.

You all maybe right, I typed in that part number on the diff on Google and found this post:

Looks like I wasted my cash on something useless. Who'd run a 2.45 SG these days?
