318 poly intake bolts - 10/28/09 04:56 AM

Do any of the intake bolts go into water jackets? Thanks in advance!

I want to say no, but I am not positive.
I usually have the block mostly empty pulling the intake so I can't say for sure, but I don't remember any.

Thanks! So if they don't go into water jackets, what does it mean when I have anti-freeze leaking at some of the intake bolts?

they either go into the water jackets or coolant is bleeding over from a nearby water port

Water does flow through part of the intake, so I would check the gasket there, or see if there is a crack somewhere.

I really don't remember ever seeing coolant in a bolt hole for the intake.

gotta be bleeding thru from one of the coolant ports.

Just pulled a intake off a original, unmolested 50K mile 318 poly due to a bent pushrod - no sealer on any of the bolts.

When I assembled it I put a light bead of silicone around each coolant port as insurance.

Driven about 1K miles and bolts are dry.

Thanks for the feedback! More info, I have the wieand aluminum 4bbl intake and it has been on the motor at least 8-10 months before the seeping started.

Have you tried snugging up the bolts?
If you re do gaskets (drain water down first) put a liberal smear of silicone on both sides of gasket.
some on any bolt you suspect of going into water.
lightly tighten then wait 2 hours snug real good leave over night then tighten good. Tighten again after heat cycle then again when cooled right down.
tighten again in a week and check periodically!
I love them little poly's!! LOL!
