All 440s have wedge shaped combustion chambers.

Re: WHATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A 440 AND 440 WEDGE - 10/26/09 07:10 PM

heres the diff..

its not a hemi

its not a poly

its not a flat head

its a wedge head, fire in combustion chamber burns in a wedge shape across the top of piston pushing it down the hole, due to the shape of combustion chamber in relation to the flat top piston,it is a wedge

IIRC a max wedge is just faster

from under the shadetree bench racing

Used to differentiate all the 440 hemi 6 pack cars you hear about at cruise nights.

But seriously, as stated, no difference.

Some cars got the 6-pack rods, nothing special, just more centrifugal weight IMO. I had the 6-pack rods on a Marine motor that I found, didnt have a 6-pack setup on it though. Found another HP2 block in my hunts and it had regular rods, Whatever they found at the assembly line they threw in.

Re: WHATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A 440 AND 440 WEDGE - 10/26/09 10:01 PM

Six-Pack rods were the same design, just thicker (and heavier). IMO, just more reciprocating mass. If you're going to rebuild it, any newer budget priced H-beam rod is superior to 40 y.o. six pack rods anyway, and the price will be similar to properly re-conditioning and old set.

Re: WHATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A 440 AND 440 WEDGE - 10/27/09 02:15 AM

How about the 440 Hemi?

There's a guy with an ad online here that says, "Rare, 440 German Cross Motor".

I asked what that was and he said " It's the ones that are stronger than the regular 440's"

Never in my life heard of a "german cross 440". A six pack block, but not german cross....

Wedge, magnum, command or super commando, tnt, etc are all just marketing terms. They are all wedge engines from the shape of the combustion chamber.

It doesn't matter to me cause originally I missed the heads part....But when you put a blanket statement out there that is how these myths get started most people will read it(who do not know) will now think 383 2 barrel heads are the same complete assembly as a 440 hp motor since it reads "heads"(which typically are the whole assembly). Most "refer" as BARE heads/castings or complete heads/heads...Also in 67 they were not. Not trying to pick anything but this is EXACTLY how people turn around and say that a 67 383 2 barrel Newport has the same "heads" as a 67 Gtx cause they read it on moparts...

Re: WHATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A 440 AND 440 WEDGE - 10/28/09 10:24 PM

QuickBpBp,

If people make bad decisions in life without doing the appropriate homework they deserve to pay the price, the internet (Moparts) is a good starting point but I wouldn't go out and spend any serious money unless I had some backup information sources. One way or another you pay your dues, either by making an uneducated buying mistake, or spending the time to get properly educated, one way or another it costs you something.

As far as heads go, split hairs all you want, my original statement is correct (but I'll give you a point on the 67 915 castings being different from 516's), besides, who uses a used assembled 40 year old set of heads with the original valves and springs?
Posted By: I go fast

Re: WHATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A 440 AND 440 WEDGE - 10/28/09 10:26 PM

But,the question by the original poster was not about heads, valves, springe etc and still can be answered in one word."NONE".A wedge is a wedge no matter how you slice it.

Yep I guess some people never heard of machine shops or good luck with low mileage used parts....My 4000lb 64 Polara Ragtop ran 12.30's with assembly line stock valves that had 90k on them and the short blaock assembly was the way Ma made it too....

Dave

Six pack rods wer engineered to be a step between
the standard 4bbl (HP or Standard) LY connecting
rod and the HEMI (Street or Race) connecting rod.
Chrysler basically wanted superior strength and
durability, but with a lower bob weight than the
HEMI rod. The 440 sixpack engine was designed to
be a low-midrange torque monster engine, so they
needed a heavy rod to handle the stresses of high
torque loads at mid to lower rpms as well as top-end rpm when all six barrels are opened.
