318 roller block cam question - 10/25/09 10:49 PM

Will the Comp Cams or Crane retro fit roller cams work in a 1985 318 block that came with a factory roller cam without block modifications. In other words are they a direct fit. I understand that older LA blocks require block oiling modifacations to make rollers work. Thanks in advance

any pre-mag roller block will take the roller cam with stock roller gear

I have an 88 318 roller block that was a flat tappet cam first..installed a lunat roller cam and used stock roller lifters and retaing gear

I used the comp 901-16 springs as they are a drop on with stock seals on the pre-mag heads

if your gonna run the pre-mag t-cover and fuel pump, you want the long nose roller cam

magnums do not oil up the block and head to the rockers...the cam is a short nose roller cam that use no fuel pump...the cam jurnals are not drill for oil to the rockers like the pre-mag cams

so dont use the mag cam unless in a mag block with pedastal rockers

you can mod the cam jurnals for oiling and drill the block for oil passages to run the old LA pre-mag head on a newer mag block though, cant do that to the mag head

much cheaper to use the stock roller lifters and just buy a roller cam

the early stock roller lifters are not oil thru like the mag lifters...but around 89-90 the pre-mag roller lifters had oil thru roller lifters and hollow push rods and oiled the old LA style thru the block/heads/shafts

I thought that was odd when I did mine, thinking it would be to much oil up top..but for 2 yrs its been oiling both ways and no problems to date..so if a mag head swap is in the future, get the oil thru roller lifters and the head swap is simple and the oiling is already solved for the pedastall mount rockers of the mag heads

not going to flat tap any more myself.got 3 diff rollers to swap around with no break in issues to worry over

they'll drop right in. depending on how big you want to go, you can get your stock roller cam reground, too..I did with mine, works great.

Yea I forgot about having the stock cam reground. Is that a reliable option?

should be. Tim at bullet said chrysler cores are better than ford and GM cores to be reground, because they are hardened much deeper, ~ .4" deep. mine has been going great, granted, I only have about 1000 miles on it so far.
