alternator 98 neon - 07/12/08 01:26 PM

My sons neons alt. went bad before i help him change it, is it easy to remove from under the car or do you have to remove everything from the top to get to it. he takes his driving test today and like any 16yr old wants to take off in his car to show his buddys that he passed (hopefully)

Thanks in advance with any help! Bob

It comes down and out from behind the tire.

If it doesn't come out from the bottom right away flip it around a few times, close your eyes for a second and it will drop right out.(OUCH) Don't ask me how I know that.

If it's like the '00-up, you remove the lock down bolt and back off the adjusting bolt from up top, then take off the right wheel/tire, remove the splash shield, remove the pivot bolt, don't forget to disconect the batt first and remove the alt wiring.
If you want to change both belts while you are there, the AC/PS belt has a tensioner, from up top, use a 17mm open end to release tension by levering it clockwise and at the same time remove belt by reaching below.
