Where to find rear main seal? - 10/22/09 08:36 PM

Where do I find a rope type seal for a 440? Can I find it locally? I don't want to put the rubber type seal in there.

Try Carquest, it seems to me there was a similar thread a while ago and someone found one there.

I bought a fel-pro rope for my 440 2 years ago from my local NAPA and it took a week to get it. they told me that I ordered and bought the LAST rope seal that Fel-Pro had...the actual last one. anywhere. forever. were they crazy?? maybe...I still have it. never used it.

I just read somewhere the other day of somebody using part of a string/rope mop for a seal with good results. I think it may have been here?

That was me. On the last three motors I've put together, I used mop strings. You guys can laugh if you like, but I have yet to have a rear seal leak. Got this tip from a long time engine builder in the area. Just cut down a 1/4" square rod to fit the grooves and use it to pound/pack the strings in. I swear, it really works!

Timely thread. My 1500 mile Speedomotive built big block is puking oil out the rear main. Pulling the engine today. Sounds like I'll be buying a mop. Any other suggestions regarding sealing ths thing up. Positive that it is the rear main as the bellhousing area of the trans was soaked with engine oil.

Yea that might work if the thickness is correct. Have you used it before?

Poision Ivy and the rest with a leaking BB rear main seal
I have the same problem with my rebuild 440.

How do you install/cut the graphtite rope seal, flat with the surface in block and alu housing.Do you oil it before installation.

Is it possible to push it in place with the crank installed?
Or do you pack it real hard?

And finally what do you use between the block and rear seal housing.

Please explain.
