Body guys - problem while spraying

Body guys - problem while spraying - 10/12/09 01:44 PM

This weekend I shot my car with DP50LF. I have a 120gal 2 stage compressor, Devilbliss FLG3 gun and was using a 1.5 tip. There's a regulator at the gun and I had one of those disposable dryers between the hose and the ragulator. I have a screen in the bottom of the cup and poured the primer through a filter cup. When I shot the test pattern the spray was nice and consistent. It stayed consistent for some time but then developed a flicker. Not too bad but enough that I had to try compensate for it. My first step for clean up is to throw some lacquer thin in the gun and spray it. The flicker disappeared. Any one have some ideas on what happened?

Could just be a little chunk of something that got through or maybe something already in the gun that finally let go. Primer will clog up a gun over time unless it's taken apart on a regular basis and cleaned very well. Your last blast of thinner most likely pushed out the problem. It doesn't take much to mess up a gun's spray pattern.

I agree with Joel71, you also need to step up to atleast 1.7 tip for primers, with 1.5 tim, you'll be there all day trying to cover the whole car. I wouldn't use anything smaller than 2.0 ,mine is 2.2 I believe

I have 2.0 and 1.8 tips but the DP50LF product sheet recommended 1.4-1.6. The next time I'll give the 1.8 a try. Thanks for the feedback.

I think DP with a 1.5-6 tip is about right, it is quite thin not a building primer...

I have had the same problem on extended sprays or where I take a "break" -- ALWAYS wipe the air nozzle / tip down with lacquer thinner every now and then, it keeps paint buildup from f'ing up your spray pattern...

I use Dupont 3924S Gun & equipment cleaner. I think it gets all the little chunks that stick inside the gun. I dump in an ounce and spray till it's empty. Repeat until the solvent comes out clean. The quicker you clean the gun after painting the better.

I have a 1.5 primer gun (Platinum by devilbiss) that shoots DP really well...unless it's DP90. That stuff is thicker than the others, and my gun struggles a little. I have to really slow down and pay attention to my overlap.

Best bet is to immediately clean the gun after each session to ensure that no paint/primer has a chance to dry.

dump the cup strainer, the primer is plugging it up.I spray primer with a 1.4 fluid tip no problem, jut have to knocked down the air pressure and it saves on matrial. if that dosen't help then you probably are sucking air from behind the tip, tighten it up a little.
