Painters Delstar Acrylic Enamel Questions - 10/11/09 06:04 PM

I'm getting close to putting color on my Coronet, actually yesterday the trunk & bottom got sprayed... It will be Delstar acrylic enamel which hasn't been available here for fifteen years so I can't run to the paint store & grab a "P"sheet.. But I have talked with a couple local painters & they tell me I can reduce it with DT870 reducer which is a urethane reducer.. I intially questioned it but the man at the painter supply confirmed it so rather than get reducer from out of state I bought the 870... This stuff is flashing off so quick it won't hold a wet edge to blend to... I'm thinking it's gotta be the reducer.. Any thoughts?? Thanks!

Thanks for the link, unfortunately it appears to have zero information about Acrylic Enamel...

FWIW I've found info that confirms Urethane Reducer is ok to use.. So it appears I may have something else going on... The paint is dry to the touch in under five minutes.. We're talking a heavy wet coat not something being sprayed to dry... as it dries it's developing a haze as well.. It's flat & smooth, no orange peel but hazing over like it's a semi-gloss finish... must be a chemical issue.. I'm using DAR (Delstar Acrylic enamel) DXR80 (Urethane Hardener) & DT-870 (Urethane reducer) the temp is around 72 degrees... For the bottom & trunk as long as it's protected I don't really care but when It's time to spray the outside panels this needs to be fixed...

How come your not using the DCC single stage paint instead?

I once tried to clean up a glass jar that had leftover DCC in it with the a Delstar line reducer and it wouldn't touch it.

Hey I shoot that paint all the time. I use DTR reducer

I have never used DT with just enamel, not saying it's not OK. I just looked at a can of DT and it doesn't say wether it is for hi temps or low. I use it with my epoxy primers. The hardner your using will cause the paint to lay out nice and gloss more than than with just reg enamel.

It says only DU 5 hardner can be used with DT reducers. Mixed at 4-1-1 ratio only.

Because while I understand how good urethane paints are these cars were originally painted with Acrylic Enamel & I've always liked the stuff.. The first car I used it on was painted in 1978 & still shines.. My Challenger has been painted now for 15 years & I think this shot sez plenty about how it looks..

Yes, your challenger is awesome!

For originality purposes the delstar is probably going to lay down and provide a more correct shine than any urethane paint. It's good paint, but with so many people using base clear it seems out of the ordinary, kinda like chevy guys repainting their 60's vettes with lacquer. It still happens, but not nearly as often anymore.

It's still available here, but the paint store people will go out of their way to sell you something newer (and more expensive). I have 2 quarts of black and a quart of clear that I use for detail work. My dad had his 64 nova painted in delstar in the early 90's and it's still holding up great.

Randy, if you want to drive to Reno, call Barret Paint Supply, 1595 Vassar St, Reno 775-329-4274.
Or Re-Neva Paint Supply on Mira Loma Dr. 775-352-2510 (www.re-neva.com). Give me a holler if you decide to make it to Reno.

If you can get the Concept DCC single stage paint in your color, it is just like spraying Delstar with hardner. (only better)
Goes on great, covers incredible and super shine..
It is more money than Delstar, but if you dont have to drive out of state to get it, probably will be less money...

I bought four gallons of Delstar back in 2003.. I have the drive covered... I didn't buy Delstar cause it's cheaper, I bought it cause I like Acrylic Enamel..

Fast (below 65°F) DTR600
Moderate Temperature (60–75°F) DTR601
Medium Temperature (70–90º F) DTR602
Hot Temperatures (85°F & Above) DTR604

It's running in the 70's here..
I'll be picking up some DT602

get the slowest reducer possible, that's where your problem is, single stage urethane reducers tend to dry alot faster. When I shoot urethane enamel ,I use the slowest reducer avaliable, not only it gives you a better gloss, but also a smooth surface, eliminating wetsanding

Don't you think using DXR80 hardner with DT reducer is the problem?

Re: Painters Delstar Acrylic Enamel Questions - 10/12/09 03:26 PM

Actually I believe my current problem is a chemical incompatablity, The P sheet that Challenger1 posted a link to sez don't use urethane reducer with DXR-80 hardener...Use one from the DTR series.. If your using DU-5 hardener then you can use DT reducer...

I do agree slower reducer flows out better.. In the past I've used plenty of Acrylic enameel with great results.. But it's been off the shelf here in California over ten years.. I can't get the stuff I used in the past & the local paint supply shops have likely forgotten most of what they once knew about the stuff..

well it's a big part of the problem,I agree, but using slower reducer will help lay the paint,so it doesn't skin over in 5 minutes, he can use urethane hardener in that enamel,I haven't shot much of PPG single stage,so I can't recommend anything, but shot plenty of old Centari and Imron . He might also have old catalyst ,which causing the haze,it's definitely not reducer. Also retarder can be used in the mix ,but it won't cure the haze either. It's possible that the enamel has old or wrong binder
