Anyone do any of this lately ? .... I am considering buying a motor and two transmissions from a guy in CA and need to find a shipper a LITTLE more reasonable than the one I have already talked to. How bad was this quote ? .. one pallet 800 lbs .... $524.00. And this is only terminal-to-terminal shipping.
OR is this the typical shipping rates these days?

I shipped an engine and trans(BB/727) about three months ago from IN to AZ through R&L carriers and paid a little over $700. They were on two different pallets but they quoted it as one. I built plywood crates on top of the pallets and when they weighed them the total was a little over 1,000#. It was terminal to terminal. Steve

Shipped a 400 block from the Carolina's to Los Angeles for $125.00 via
Fowardair.com (a couple years ago) If you can get the seller to haul it to the airport it's the best way to go.
I'm sure the rates have changed some but still a better way to go.

Wow Steve ... how can these people justisfy these rates ? ..... I have a high 20 mpg diesel PU and I could go round-trip for almost what they want one-way....in your case.
How many other carriers did you check?

They wanted more than that but came down on the price. There is one other carrier close Freight Liner and they wanted $1500. I didn't have a way to load it on anything larger than a pickup at my house so I had to take it to a terninal to get it on thier truck and that also limited wher I could take it. I thought about delivering it but had to figure in my time and could make more if I was at work.

and how long would you be in business doing that?
check with DHL and see if they'll negotiate with you.

LOL ...I am not looking at being in "business" doing that ! ... but I would think that T to T shipping would be alot cheaper than what we are seeing here.
I will check DHL and also Fedex freight.

2200-2500 one way x 2 = 4400 miles on the short side
4400/20 = 220 gallons of fuel
220*4.50/gallon = $990
Plus the 2-5 days of travel, food, lodging, vehicle wear and tear.
I used to go through the same thing when hauling cars for people. Nobody ever thinks about the all inclusive cost.
750 isn't that bad, imo
I just got a quote to ship a Dana from Texas to SoCal, $385. Weight wasn't anywhere near your weight.

Hey Rob .....I was talking about Steve ... and his IN to AZ deal. To consider total costs and the bottom line? .. for sure. But you can make a "excursion" and a vacation out of the whole deal too.
And STILL ... the shipping - T to T - should be alot less ... IMO.
I have not gotten a hold of DHL or Fedex yet ... has anyone ever used them on stuff like this ?

eshipping.com ask for Hunter they will email you the BOL and labels and bill you after it is delivered safe should be able to get that done $350-$400 range If you drop at the terminal and have customer PU at terminal it is better

Yep, just block and caps for me. Their specialty is shipping motorcycles. so bigger is no problem. has to be pallet-able. They even load and unload from a pickup truck at the dock so the shipper/receiver has little to but walk up and do paper work at the terminal. Super smooth. I've worked harder to get letters out of the Post Office

Ive been in the shipping and trucking business for 18 yrs. This isnt a bad price. First of all they cannot stack freight on top of the block or transmission. They wont risk stakin it on top of other freight because of fear of leaking oil or transmission fluid. The block/transmission will need to be strapped or bolted to the skid. Your shipper must know this. The weight should be more around 575lbs. So have your shipper put that weight on the bill of lading. The freightline will weight it anyway most of the time. If they find it weighs more they will charge you. If they find it weighs less than your 800lbs they will say nothing and charge you for what your shipper wrote down.
Now it should be known that this is what we call ugly freight. Noone wants to particularly haul it. Its more of pain in the rear than anything.
Now if you want to save money, the best option for you is ((if)) you have any friends who work for a company who ships regularly with freight lines have them call and get a quote as they will have substancially more discount pricing than you are receiving. Tell him to get a quote and a quote number showing the costs and you will prepay their costs by check. That way they will not be out anything. And as said previously California to Michigan is a long way. Unless your getting a great deal. Freight costs and eat up what value your getting in the engine/transmission. Couldnt you find something within 200 miles where you could go and pick it for for $70 or less. That would be my first option. Finally, IF you do go with getting this from California, get a quote number from the freightline, so you dont get billed higher charges at a later date. The freight should be classified as "used auto parts"
